Ad Infinitum - 3D Experimental Animation (VIDEO in page 3)

I just completed an experimental 3D animation called Ad Infinitum! Look for it at your local film fest! You can also see the teaser on YouTube in HD 720p-> LINK
I used ZBrush to make the base geometry and textures.
Synopsis:
ā€œAd Infinitumā€ is an exploration of the fractal like details of a sculptural continuum.
Why make Ad Infinitum?
Ā· To explore filmmaking through using intuitive image creation techniques
Ā· To make imagery that will inspire those who see it and show that digital media can evolve from using intuition and spontaneity.
Ā· To touch upon the metaphysical features of reality, mainly time, space, and the concept of infinity.

Here are some screenshots of the sculpts…

Here’s what’s happening…
o ā€œAd Infinitumā€ is a sculptural continuum that continuously unfolds before your eyes by revealing finer and finer details emanating from a single point. What you are seeing on the screen is not the camera delving deeper and deeper into the sculpture. The sculpture pieces are actually expanding and the camera is just simply observing it from different angles. Each sculpture piece can be thought of as a perfect square plane with a hole in the center that is exactly half the size of the square. As the square expands, eventually the hole in the center of the square becomes the same size as the original size of the square. By continually expanding the series of squares in a linear procession by powers of two, each piece scales from an imperceptibly small size to an incredibly enormous size with no gap between the squares. This procession is a cycle where the last square in the series seamlessly combines with the first. The sculptural continuum shifts intermittently from three dimensional to a variety of two dimensional designs. These two dimensional images were created by accident while applying colors to the sculptures. I liked the results so much that I decided to process the images and include them in the film.

Here’s some more…rendered in Maya…

Really interesting work, kongni.
Regarding the pictures, please see here:

Here’s a GIF that shows how these parts are linked together. Basically all of the sculpted pieces fit perfectly inside one another. I’m using simple powers of 2 math to make each sculpted piece expand, revealing the piece inside it…Like looking into a fractal

…Hmmm…I can’t upload it. It’s under 500k…???

Thanks for the posting info Moni

These are great, now i really want to see them all together. good stuff

I don’t know what’s the deal with GIFs, I’ve tried to upload a few for the past couple of days and it didn’t work either. Anyway, that’s amazing what you got there, I wish I could see it in motion! Can we have a sneak peek at the film, maybe?

Looks great. Wonder how it will look in motion

Nice! I really really like these. Very trippy looking. It reminds me of mush-tech

lovely designs, can we see the animation?

whats going on with zbrush:grimacing: this is truly different master piece. waiting for the whole piece to come together.

This is Beautiful

That’s some really cool stuff. you should check out this documentary on BBC 4. It’s about chaos theory, infinte, repeating patterns in nature and the underlying mathematical formulas…

Very unique use of ZBrush! It would be great if you could provide detailed info about your step-by-step techniques here. I’m sure the community would find it very useful and informative!

Wonderfull stuff! The Maya renders are awesome. Would love to see the finished animation! :+1: !

Hmmm … very different. And, very interesting. Looking forward to seeing the animation.

WOW MAN ! THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL !

Love the color and the pattern…
reminds me somehow on inka/indian and shaman… very spiritual…LOVE :+1:

When can we see the animation ?

mayas meet pc chip  Yeah, show us the animation, this is great :+1:

Yes! Mayan processors…computing calendars…flight through time… journeying to the heart of the sun…to the dance of the Maya…

CLIP…NOW!!!
(looks fab btw

Thanks for the compliments everyone!
I will post some info and screenshots of my workflow for the film soon!

In the meantime you can watch the Ad Infinitum teaser on You Tube in HD720P

Let me know what you think!

Respect, very beautiful,

groetjes perpetual;)
