A newbie Male Bust...WIP

Hi All

I’m still in the process of learning ZBrush (had it 2 weeks now) and would like any crits as to how I’m doing…(Bit nervous here amongst so many excellent artists)

Any tips or tricks will be very much appreciated  Male Bust1.jpg

Nice to meet you all

Dreamreef

Hi there, learning Zbrush is fun isn’t it? Nice bust, good proportions and smooth facial elements. Go on and sharpen the detail! Maybe you can round of the shoulders a bit more? Don’t be nervous about posting, I only meet nice ppl here. With beginning work it is hard to get replies, which is understandable with all those heads and orcs that are posted each day ;). I own Z about some months now, and posted my second WIP only a day ago. Perhaps you can look at it and crit it, then I will have a reply too!

Doh! The link to my wip: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=35351

Hi Dreamreef,

It’s a good start :+1:
It seems you have your proportion in place
Just remember that the clavical bone ends closer to the shoulders.
Keep on going… oh! we all get a bit nervous when we first post… you’ll get over it as you get more acquainted with ZB

Thankyou for your replies Plakkie and Elarcano…nice to meet you

Yes it’s great fun Plakkie…having the time of my life with it…LOL…This is so much better than the other software I’ve been using (Bryce & Poser) as all I could make with them was furniture of one sort or another…Don’t get me wrong they are good but to me ZBrush leaves them way behind where modelling is concerned,
They say your never to old to learn and their right…at least I think they are…LOL…I’m 52  (an old granny) and this is my first attempt at this kind of modelling.

Thanks again

Dreamreef

P.S On my way over to see yours now Plakkie

Ha, being older has an advantage: Your face gets nice folds and wrinkles that you can study and put into your Zbrush models!

Yep Plakkie…I do have an advantage there… …but quite honestly…even I don’t want to study this face for too long…

It’s great if you can laugh about yourself and I’m in stitches everyday…LOL

Dreamreef

Your right Plakkie…I do have an advantage over most with the wrinkles… but even I don’t want to look at this face for too long…if you know what I mean

It’s good if you can laugh at yourself and I’m in stitches every day… :stuck_out_tongue:

Dreamreef

Nice to meet you as well Dreamreef
You’re never too “old” to learn and you can always learn something from everybody… you just have to want to :stuck_out_tongue:

PS.
Check out the Practical Manual, it will help you get acquainted with this Awesome program :+1:

Thanks elarcano,

I want to learn everything that I can about ZBrush (which I know will entail lots of reading… )

I have checked out the Practical Manual (not properly yet) and one of the things I’m having a bit of a problem with is the Pinch Tool…I either can’t see what’s happening with it or it pinches far too much…any suggestions with that?

Any and all help appreciated

Dreamreef

As far as I know the pinch tool pulls the geometry towards the center of your brush. Try this: make Sphere3D, go into edit-mode, make a ‘canyon’ in it with a small standard (STD) brush, and then use the pinch tool on it with a larger draw size. Vary the Z-intensity (left of the draw size) to see what effect it has.
I haven’t used pinch much, but I have used the ‘layer’ brush in a practical sense. I wonder what it could be used for…

Dreamreef, by the time I have “learned everything that I can about Zbrush”, I will have nice wrinkles to study too! The last few months, Zbrush hasn’t seized to amaze me, it has so many uses and layers… It’s wisdom to laugh at yourself, keeps you healthy, and Elarco, maybe we should own a T-shirt that reads: “you just have to want to :p” :+1:

That’s “Elarcano”, sorry 'bout that. Does it have a meaning, is it your name?

Thanks for that tip Plakkie…I’ll have to keep practising till I get it right

Dreamreef

Hi Dreamreef and Plakkie,

The pinch tool move the polygons towards the center of of the pointer. Try moving it in circles and you’ll see what happens. I haven’t used it either… but I’m sure it’ll come in handy later on.

elarcano’s tranlation is thearcane = the arcane… old story for that nik… and by the way… my name’s Fidel

And of course making fun of yourself helps you realize things about yourself… and it keep others from making fun at your cost

The Arcane… wow… I guess there are some funny stories behind many nicks. There sure is one behind Plakkie ;).
Pinch tool can be usefull when you make wrinkles, folds, etc. You can pull the wrinkles together, making them tighter. Also used it once for an ear, making some curves smaller and sharper…

Come on Dreamreef! Where are the updates?
Get those Zbrushes moving

Hehe, yeah! We Want Wips! Hut hut hut!

HI Plakkie & elarcano

This is the joy of becoming old… …the old grey matter (brain) doesn’t work like it used to…

I started doing the ears but when I looked at the other ear that was mirrored, it had completely messed it up (good style)…I don’t know what happened to the mirror bit…it was so far off it was nearly in the next street… …So all I can say on that is HELP!!!..where did it/I go wrong.
I’ve now got one of the ears done but the other is still a mess…I keep playing with it…but it just laughs at me…as I pull more hair out trying to work out what I am doing wrong… :stuck_out_tongue: (I’m going to be bald at this rate…LOL)

At the moment the WIP is going at a snails pace :frowning:

You two (your doing great) have left me at the starters gate… …keep up the good work.

Dreamreef

Hi there Dreamreef! I’m sorry to hear about your ear-problem. When learning new software thing will happen that screw up your work completely (or partially completely ;)). I know in my first weeks with Zbrush my models sometimes totally went haywire when switching between subdiv levels. Now I have a bit more practice, that doesn’t happen anymore (though I’m not totally sure what I did wrong back then ).
But back to those ears: by mirrowing we are talking about pressing X, Y or Z while using a brush or clicking on those letters in the ‘Transform’ panel, right? (just making sure) I know that sometimes a model isn’t truly symmetrical. Then using mirror functions can produce strange results, doing something good at one end and something different at the other. Maybe this was the case but as I read you there is very much distortion on the other side (“nearly in the next street”)… Such big distortion might have been caused by something else.
It’s hard to tell from just text, so why don’t you send us some pictures? Show us the ear that’s still good, so we can learn from that too, and show us the bad ear and maybe we can figure out what happened.
We all tend to think that we are at the starters gate compared to the work of others. When I look at your first picture I admire the wellbalanced proportions of bust and face. If you look at my Head-thread you can see I’m struggling and pulling out my hair because of bad proportions at the moment. Seeing those elegant eyes and lips you made is a real inspiration. So stop pulling out those precious hairs we have left and send us some pics, then we can learn from each other. That’s the way of the Newbie Club!

Hi Plakkie,

The best ear isn’t brilliant…it still needs more work but it’s much better than the other…been playing again with him but still nowhere near yet…Here’s the reasonable one…I hope I’ve done this bit right too…LOL
