Wow, looks like we’ve gone primetime! Thanks Mr. Moderator.
OK, I have been contacted by a few people too shy to post here. A shame really, that is the point of the thread.
For the most part posing isn’t your issue. Modifying the working ‘Templant’ is, or seems to be. Or starting with your own. Especially if you are interested in cross-platform help. Try to think of it this way, you just accept a wire frame, you accept it’s relatively ridgid, you accept it can be bent, but in practice the bending doesn’t always happen as you expect. But experience corrects that, usually after messing up some wire.
If you have modified the underlying structure without understanding why I posted above as either PixelMan or Ferret/Lemur thingy, you may be experiencing classroom anxiety. Let’s use PixelMan where I supplied in the thread, one with the Morph (locked) and one with out, where various zspheres were in different positions. For good reason. So I encourage pople to use the version with the Morph stored at least until you understand the process.
Try going back to the Morph locked version and working from that until you have a little experience under your belt. In many cases people are creating unnecessary headaches. You can reposition, scale, etc., any and all zspheres and connecting chains. From the ‘Templant’ you can create all kinds of characters while understanding the relationship. Try matching the poses ffroyd or I have put up, even some of joe_seig’s, to see if your getting it right.
If you rotate and goto Preview and it messes up geometry you moved the wrong thing. If you have nothing else to rotate then your rig is faulty (similar to Gimble Lock in animation). That is why I suggest testing with the provided ‘Templant’s’ I’ve worked with others like Atwooki to develop. The goal was to help everyone out and because they are PC/Mac friendly and it makes it easier to help you.
I provided the ‘Templant’s’ to help people get started and to compare the structure of their z-figures in static and posed variations.
Some exceptions to this exist of course, but it is a good guide.
I hope this helps a few people, and more step forward - here - on the thread so all can benefit. The little PixelMan may look silly, but nothing in it can’t be modded to suit your own structure, I just like goofy looking characters vs totally real one’s.
Hey jason,
thanks for the explaination, these how-to recapitualtions are always useful and sometimes necessary. sometimes its hard to remember where which hint was written, then such a summary is very helpful! Thx again.
Í hope that I can come up with another ZSpherecharacter soon, at the moment I´m with my starship.
cheers

This thread is an amazing source of information. Thanks for all the research you’ve all been putting into this. I’ve read the whole thread(took me 2 days) and I sort of get the gist of it. It would be helpful if you put a summary on the rules/guides needed to create a z-rig and the same for posing. It is really daunting trying to remember bits of pieces from something a hundred or so posts ago
Although I have very little experience with z-spheres, i’ll try to see what I can come up with. Thank you for all the help and research you have put into this. small_orange_diamond

Welcome solvalou, glad your enjoying this. And yes, sooner or later I will get aroud to putting it all together in some format. Probably later. With lots of extras.
Just had to test this while seeing the legendary ‘starter turtle’ on another thread.

I have several questions about zspheres. When i try working with them I can’t get them to sub divide more than 2 levels. This only allows me to bulk up the character. Do you have to convert them into a polymesh, and don’t you loose the posability you have when you convert to a polymesh? Also can you render out zspheres with AO, it seems like you can, but I haven’t tried it yet.
In the Tools palette down at the bottom is Adapative - set this for whatever the final level you want to work at (dependant on memory of couse). Then sculpt away, start at lower levels and work up to the higher ones.
This what you meant?
How did this thread get way back here on page 5?
I’m learning allot about Zspheres from all this.
This is great stuff guys, keep it up.
Sorry Manixolated, I’ve been a little under the weather and all things Z need to be tweaked regulalry. I should be back and caught by Monday, maybe I’ll even start assembling stuff into a full on instructional product. So those who are ‘reading challenged’ can have a Cole’s Notes version.
Glad you are getting some value out of the volumes of information.
I would have felt alluded… if only I knew what he’s trying to say
Any luck with that?
With what exactly? Sorry been a little busy with my hands in several cookie jars…
With that. I know you’re busy though.
Oh that, sorry, that may be a little ways off - I have started to assemble things though.
Should have a character from one of my other threads that I will be revisiting and I’ll begin posting here from the beginning and hopefully that will help a bit.
Sorry to keep you and others in suspense.
Take your time.
How are the cookies?
Hhhmmmmm, seems a little quiet around here. Sorry, been busy with several projects, companies, and individuals with screws loose.
What’s your excuses??
Whipped this new guy up trying something, based on the PixelMan templant above in the thread.
Also reworked the earlier fella ‘Don’t Shoot!’.

“individuals with screws loose” … hope you managed to screw them up!
Cool characters you’re making.
My excuses are that I’ve been learning how to use my first ‘full’ 3D package (Cinema4D), which I got at the beginning of the year, and I’ve been studying anatomy. It’s all in preparation for taking my ZB work up a few levels in the not too distant future.
Hahaha Moochie, that made me laugh. Well then I expect to see some amazing work from you here and soon.
NOTE: Send me an email, I’m curious why you chose Cinema4D - not a test, I just collect data now and again from various people.
Been awhile thought I’d toss somthing else in here… I apologize, as I can’t keep up with what I wanted to do for those watching. Things will settle down a bit in a short while. Of course others are still free to contribute and encouraged to do so.
