Grattis Tomas! Snyggt jobbat!
That’s Swedish for: Contulations Tomas! Good work!
It is very cool to se a fellow Swede make it to Pixologic. We wish you all the best of luck!

Nichod : Ho yeah! That is a clean, simple and very efficent interface, the learning curve is almost at zero with that kind of interface, pixo must do something for Zbrush, cause everything is a little spreaded everywhere… make the learning curve much harder. If they can do that interface in sculptris and the other request you said, plus adding the same way we can work with alpha with the rect brush to add fine skin pores and some other great feature of Zbrush, we will have the best tool!! Really simple to use and yet ultra powerfull.
Hi,
I don’t think Zbrush’s interface is too complicated. Because you can customize it! You can make your own palettes and hide menus you don’t need, you can make it as simple as you want it. I use Zbrush just for sculpting and not painting, so I have customized my UI to my own personal way of doing things.
Just my two cents,
-B
bLawless : You said that because you already know Zbrush, it’s like everything, once you know it, it’s not complicated… But remember the first times you had opened Zbrush, don’t say to me that you found it as easy as it is in sculptry to start sculpting, painting and all… no way! And when you start and don’t know Zbrush, you can’t customize it, cause you don’t know it. Custom menu is when you are already familiar with Zbrush and know the tool you want to use the more etc and make an interface with that to get your workflow faster, but if you don’t know Zbrush, you can’t customize it.
So it’s why Zbrush need to have a better workflow, try sculptris, it already have a better workflow, ok it’s less powerefull and simpler, but you get the idea. Even mudbox is a lot easier to learn when you open it for the first time.
I like more Zbrush cause it’s more powerfull and complete package, but in the workflow area, it can be greatly improved. my 2 cents.
please bring dynamic tessellation into zbrush 4!
Big guns: You’re probably right
When I saw what Rick Baker was doing in Zbrush I sat down and practiced. I don’t know how to make a buttons more simple, or how to make collapsable folders ‘more’ collapsable. And if you try a button and it’s not what you need, you can remove it from the UI. It’s whatever you want it to be, even colors. Hmm, maybe a ‘zbrush beginners manual’.
But you’re probably right.
Hello All,
absolutely a great news!
i am not a sculpting expert… i have tried a lot of time zbrush… and all other kind of this software but i can’t get any resoult!
30 min with sculptris get me a lot of resoult!
I think i’ll be a Pixologic Customer very soon
good luck!
Franz
i am a sculptris user not a zbrush user and as such have a totally different view to most here.
a long time ago i downloaded the demo version of zbrush, want to know what i created with it…nothing, the interface was too complicatd to just run and gun with, brushes didnt behave like you expected them to. all in all trying to use zbrush for the first time is infuriating to say the least.
sculptris on the other hand i found recently (dec 09) and almost as soon as i opened it i was running off at full pelt sculpting stuf in what i can only describe as te easiest learing curve i have ever seen in a computer program. dont get me wrong im no pro modeler like about 60% of people here but i like to create things that are simple and fun to do.
i appreciate the sheer power of zbrush and the truly astounding stuff that can be created with it, in fact it was the gentleman that makes his jewelry uisng zbrush that made me want to try some form of sculpting for myself.
now i dont care what any of you zbrushers say sculptris could have been developed into a major rival for zbrush, i know thomas said he was done with developing it but nobody can tell what the future holds and as it turns out this is what happened.
however if someone had paid thomas to develop sculptris alot further i think he might have gone for it, and pixologic are not stupid, they will have been watching sculptris with interest, watching its user base grow at an alarming rate, i have no doubt they even tried it for themselves maybe just to see what the potential was.
they obviously like what they saw because they hired thomas, but was this as benevolent as it sounds?, pixologic are a business and are in the business of making money through software, u could say that due to the nature of sculptris and zbrush that they are competing tech even though its a known fact that right now zbrush is the uber killer but theres nothing to say it would stay that way forever, so pixologic decided to make a shrewd move and hired the programmer, in doing this im pretty damn sure they made sure they gained the ip for sculptris (which they did because now they are offering sculptris “as a pixo freebie”), i dont chastise them for that i applaud them its a very good business move.
i read earlier that they thought it stupid to have 2 similar programs being sold by one company, all i can say is uhm heloooo AUTODESK anyone!! they have more than one “similar” program that they sell and seem bent on usurping any other software of the same ilk as fast as they can. IF pixo develop sculptris as i hope they will i think they should listen to the sculptris userbase (those that come here) for new features they want in the program. however i feel that whats going to happen is sculptris will be absorbed into zbrush to make zbrush far more new user friendly.
personally i think pixologic have the opportunity to please all people all of the time if they play their cards right. how…like what follows.
by all means merge sculptris into zbrush BUT
develop the base sculptris into something alot more
(gpu acceleration) (lots of other things have been asked for goto the sculptris forum for ideas)
if pixo want sculptris to be a “taster for zbrush” then make it a taster, limit it in some way (no not watermarks or save disabled like other LAME taster/demos) maybe limit its use of bump maps, limit its polycount or other limitations of a similar ilk the separate it from the big zbrush. if your going to dangle the carrot then make it a carrot worth eating or at least taking a bite of.
just an idea, but maybe users could share ZB UI configs into a dedicated thread ? could be useful to understand better how to streamline workflows.
However i do think some workflows in ZB could be streamlined: all plugins should be integrated and very probably many workflows coule become more efficient. Many people just use Mudbox because the UI is cleaner and more logical…
My lady wants me to stop making monsters and make somthing cute. I’m on it. I feel like a mad scientist.
Amazing.
Good move Pixologic:D
Personally I find this a little saddening. I’ve enjoyed Sculptris as a stand alone from other applications, I only hope that it isn’t completely squashed or absorbed into zbrush
Yeah, as happy as I am for the programmer of this awesome little app, being able to get that nice new job and be right out my way here is lovely CA, I also am now very very very sad and bummed out that now the program will no longer be a freebie and I’m glad I downloaded the thing a few weeks back before Pixel got ahold of the thing, even if they will end up making it better, it’ll also end up costing me more money then I will ever have, just like most other programs that end up being bought out by these larger companies.
So, I’m a bit sad
It’s like, this thing happens every time some nice cool and free or shareware type program that comes out, always seems to end up being bought out, but worse, like is mentioned above, then it ends up not even being a stand alone program anymore, which I would sure be hoping that Pixel is going to end up doing with it, (keeping it stand alone)?
Thanx and congrats, Thomas…md

I was working in zbrush the day I got it and it seemed easy enough (especially with all the free training videos out there). The interface seems deceptively complicated when first opening it, only because its more than just a sculpting program (it isn’t even on the sculpting-UI by default). I would expect Sculptris to have a simpler UI in comparison the same way I expect MSPaint to not have Photoshop’s curve editors and 3d tools.
Someone mentioned it earlier, but I too would like to see Sculptris have shortcuts similar to Zbrush. Switching back and forth seems to throw me off when I want to move the camera, and I seem to frequently hit shift hoping to smooth, alt to subtract, etc.
great application, congratz Tomas!
On the subject of incorporating sculptris features into the zbrush I think there would be war going on between quads and triangles. Zbrush is playing perfectly with quads, on the other hand sculptris dyanamic tesselation uses power of triangles. It won’t be easy mix these two together, or am I wrong?
Quads are just Tris in pairs.
And I believe Z is already on the right track with Tris anyway…
Look at Decimation Master…
I think the 2.5 “rubbish” just needs more attention, to move it beyond novelty toward something generally more useful. Would love to see animated layers and paths added for brushes and lights, and improved perspective as well. A timeline with time lapse painting effects would be cool too. Also, I always thought there should be a profile view window indicating each layer as a colored shape showing its absolute lowest and highest depth in relation to the other layers.
Just imagine if you could convert an animated mesh into a sequence of 2.5D frames. 2.5D animbrushes would be so sweet.
Perhaps Sculptris will become the program for people who are bothered by the “not useful in production” aspects of zBrush.
this is a great program ive heard about a month ago, but i have one lingering fear about this program now.
will sculptris still be free program to download and get updates down the line?
if not i would be a sad panda…
First of all, congratulations!!! You deserve it! You worked hard and this is your heaven!!!
But, can you tell me if the sulptris will be free? I mean, many people uses sculptris because do not have enouth money to buy a licence to use zbrush.
So, will it end like indigo render?
Well, as long as we are engaging in wishful thinking. What if you could paint 2.5 affects onto your 3d object? Or paint material affects onto your object in a more intuitive way? Make everything intuitive and wysiwyg.
In a similar way that you can use symmetry in the quick sketch it would be cool if we could use symmetry in 2.5 stuff as well. I know that you can just do your drawing and then cut it in half and mirror it later. But it is not the same as when your drawing in symmetry. When your drawing in symmetry the effect is a whole different thought process. Not sure if it is in 5 or not but I am surprised that photoshop did’nt get this a long time ago.
Make it so you can use your 2.5 brushes on 3d objects and where applicable use 3d brushes in 2.5d. I am not sure if you can already do this next one or not, but how about if you could make a texture template of your object and use it to paint on in 2.5d?
Hopefully the floor and lighting and camera controls are improved in the next version. Spotlight looks fantastic.
I am also very impressed with how easy it is to paint in Sculptris. Masking should work the same way in the paint side as it does in the 3d side though. In the beginning with ZB it seemed like there were too many choices to familarize yourself with to do even some basic things. Don’t get me wrong I think ZB is Awesome! My only criticism is that sometimes it is not all that intuitive.
My only criticism is that sometimes it is not all that intuitive.
Sometimes!!!??? LOL
Looks pretty intuitive from the screenshot…
Good addition!
