A Gift From Pixologic

Oh don’t get the wrong impression from my last post. I think from a business standpoint Pixol did the smart thing. They may have even beaten the Blender Foundation to the punch. Yes, they do hire developers. People are scared though, in these hard ecconomic times most average people cant afford 1k$ plus packages. That is why i bought Zbrush. I use it to compliment Vue esprit, Poser 7 and Blender. We Hobbyists have to make do with cheap programs. My next purchase, I’m considering Silo.

Zbrush lite would be cool. Something under the 60$ range for starting artists would be great.

Lets all hope that Zbrush continues to stay free for version upgrades. :sunglasses:

That crease tool is awesome.
It’s like outlining the details with a pencil and then they’re just there.

You know what would be awesome though?
If sculptris wouldn’t just shut down every 5 minutes if my polycount goes over 300.000.
I could spend more time on making stuff look pretty rather than making it look ugly again that way.

300.000 doesn’t exactly leave much room for details either… hmmm.

Congrats DrPetter

keep in mind that Sculptris was never meant for high res Poly modeling.

Yeah the crease is great. I often use pinch after crease to tighten it up.
Also once your tri count gets too high you can use the reduce button or the reduce tool to lower them. It maintains the shapes pretty well. Also once your ready to put that much level of detail into the model it might be time to import the model into Zbrush.

300.000 isn’t that much.
I see people showing pics off with over 2 million tris.

I’m thinking that Pixologic quick acquisition of sculptris is due to the many shelved brilliant ideas that they could not bring to Zbrush but, think sculptris’ power would allow. So I’m hopeful

i’m not working at pixologic so i can’t see how they’re marketing department wants this to move ahead. sculptris likely cost them money so don’t expect it to stay free.

i can’t see the logic in making a “lite” art tool out of sculptris unless they overhaul one app to be more similar than the other. the two interfaces are apples and oranges. i hate the sculptris interface and some people hate the z brush interface. what good would be offering a beginners tool with a radically different mindset to the pro tool?

me, personally, i see the tech behind sculptris being rolled into z brush for the people who just don’t get z-spheres. i hate the dumb things. everything always comes out twisted when i use them. there might be some minor changes or improvements to the freebie version in my future vision. but i doubt they’ll develop it any further .

as for the people offended by my homeless analogy, sorry. i’ve since noticed some of you are here new and would be here ONLY for sculptris. but this thread is located in zbrush news and until the latest news zbrush was the whole and sole reason to be on zbrush central. and the “i can’t afford zbrush” comments have been around for much longer than two days. i’m generally confused as to why someone would sign up to a forum they don’t have the software for.

i personally consider forums like these a place to find a solution to a problem. as my join date/post count might suggest.

Again, the OP makes this statement:

Consistent with this ethos and spirit to help you, the artist, unleash the creative beast within, we are currently developing other exciting future products.

As a taste of things to come, Pixologic would also like to give you a little appetizer ‘goodie’, an Alpha version of Sculptris for Windows - a unique, very ‘cool’ artistic modeling application still in raw baby stage and now incubating at Pixologic HQ.

Developing ‘other exciting future products’. That doesn’t sound like simply incorporating new developments into ZBrush - it suggests Pixologic are intending to extend their range, and the following paragraph suggests Sculptris is part of this.

It’s entirely possible to have two related products with a different interface. The major differences between the two products are navigation and look and feel. ‘Lite’ versions tend to be more simplistic and aesthetically pleasing in the UI, as it attracts users with different approaches to professionals. They want to be able to do something cool quickly. A professional wants to do something useful quickly as part of his or her workflow, but with more flexibility and power - there’s a difference.

I’m sure when the dust settles on ZBrush 4, we’ll find out a bit more.

By the way, apart from the crease tool, I also found zooming using the mouse wheel very handy. It’s something I wish ZBrush had (along with the current Alt-LMB combination).

@ moose o death
why we sign up (or post again after the trial versions of zbrush expired) ?
it is easy why … we too have the software related to zbrushcentral …
It is called sculptris .

The first post in this thread directly from your beloved Pixologic says this ;

Try it out, play with it, have fun, make some great artwork and share your art with us in the newly open Sculptris forum here in ZBrushCentral. This new forum will enable Sculptris artists to share and communicate with other Sculptris users, as well as other leading artists who frequent ZBrushCentral.

but to sum it up some of the zbrushcentral forum users were not really friendly it sounded like some are really against the sculptris users :grimacing:
(if we have to read comments from Jahya and your comment… and don´t think that this was irony from the first written letter to amuse the world… we would think again to post anything here)

I think you’d have to be pretty sensitive to allow one or two ‘hostile’ users to put you off from posting.

Well my decision to think again about posting would be another
if I want to post some pictures without getting response ,critism, tips etc I coud easily use an image uploader instead of posting here.

Not the as you decripe “hostile” users which you can find everywhere…in nearly any forum ;).

My Sculptris thread didn’t get any responses either but i’m not complaining. I’m working on something more impressive

I wasn’t saying they were being hostile… I was saying that’s how they were being described by you, hence the use of quote marks.

I have read some really mean posts comparing users of free software to homeless here and I can understand why sculptris users can complain about us, old Zbrush users… I never understood how using a software can develop into religious fanatism or software-racism or what the hell is this. and for the sculptris users who are afraid of losing what they had I m sure this will only be good for all of us.

Please bear in mind that I can never talk about what has not already been announced, so there’s very little that I can say concerning future plans. However, there is one fact that has already been announced that I’m very surprised nobody has brought up in all the pages of speculation in this thread:

Sculptris [COLOR=White]Alpha 5

Alpha versions precede beta versions, which in turn come before final releases. If the intent was to bury or phase out Sculptris, why would that particular name have been given to this version? The new name demonstrates that the current release of Sculptris is only the beginning.

The first thing that I thought when I saw the Sculptris article on CGSociety.org was that Pixologic should get behind it. Life is good, no?

Hi dargelos,
The above scenario is not just confined to ZBC as you know it happens on the forums of most softwares,it is a kind of elitism and it will always be with us I fear.
There are a lot of Sculptris users that actually have licenses for other sculpting software, and some actually have licenses for ZBrush, what we all seemingly agree on is that Sculptris simplicity and immediacy makes it an utter joy to use.

Well, firts of all, congrats to Dr Petter.
Second : I’m sad. I tried severall sculpting app, from ZB to Blender.
Eveyone as it’s advantages, I like ZB for Zspheres, 3DC for freedom of voxels, Silo because I like Silo, etc.
The only one I dont’t like is Mud (I dont know why…)

When I discovered Sculptris, I was in heaven. A simple, powerful, and free app wich allow me to create without limits . I love this app.

I hope the future of Sculptris will not be to sleep in a corner and live in the shadow of ZB.

See u soon on the Sculptris section to share some works.

“There are a lot of Sculptris users that actually have licenses for other sculpting software, and some actually have licenses for ZBrush, what we all seamingly agree on is that Sculptris simplicity and immediacy makes it an utter joy to use.”

Speaking right out of my heart!
