Great job on the bust guti ! Spawn’s always been one of my favorite characters, and you’ve done him great justice.
ok : i’m hit
@Branduarte: Thank you very much… I’m very happy taht you visited my thread: I’m a big fan of your work and I’m litterally in love with your girls!!!
@nickolasnm: Yes… it’s quite impressive that this is a zBrush render!
@Dragon: Thank You :)… here I am for the mini tut in a minute!
@Bluudev: Thank you! I’m very glad to ear that!
@kilik128: Thank you very much!
For now I don’t have too much time for making an explicative tutorial. Actually I can not even explain why some settings… especially in the parameters of the BPR filters.
I think the best thing is that I attach a project so that those who wish can make their own tests and possibly look at the settings.
The project is the one I used to make the original image… but I mantained only lower level of subdivision in order to mantain the project file size low.
You can download the zBrush4R2b project from HERE (right click and download).
In the following I assume you have loaded the project under zBrush.
As I previous said the final image was obtained composing three different zBrush Renders in PSP.
The one I used as “base” uses caplight and one Light:
The lightcap was grabbed from a pictture of city during a sunset; the photo was goggled and you can find them under LIGHT->BACKROUND.
I’ve modified one caplight with Alpha… you can see the final lightcap under LIGHT->LIGHTCAP.
To obtain the render I used as a base you have to:
- disable Light1 and Light2 from LIGHT
- disable all BPR filters
The One I used as Main Light:
To obtain the render I used as a Main Light you have to:
- delete al Lightcaps (LIGHT->LIGHTCAP->DELETE for all caplights)
- Enable BPR filters (1,2,3,4,5 and 9,10,11)
The One I used as Rim Light:
To obtain the render I used as a Rim Light you have to:
- disable Light1 (LIGHT-> deselect the first light)
- enable Light2 (LIGHT-> select the second light)
note: also this render don’t use any caplights and uses BPR filters (1,2,3,4,5 and 9,10,11)
I’ve attached to the project also a PSP sample file with the very simple composition I used
Some notes about the project:
- I’ve used as base material for Spawn the attached material “Skin Plastic”: this material is slightly modified from the original “Skin” material uploaded by Antropus
(I don’t remember very well where I downloaded it… but it was since the zBrush2.5 version) - For the Shadow I’ve set to 100% the global Shadow (RENDER->BPR SHADOW->GSTRENGHT to 1) and set the angle to 0.5.
In the original image the blur setting (RENDER->BPR SHADOW->BLUR) was set to 3 only for the “base”. For the “Main Light” and the “Rim Light” I used a blur of 1. - In the BPR filters I make an extensive use of the slider Fresnel, Depth and Shadow.
Please fell free to ask if something it is not clear and if you find useful this post let me know
Sorry… double post

nd tnks for sharing u workflow is always a pleasure to see how you do it!!
Guti, this an awesome render!
I think that your work deserves a place in the top row!
I’m going to try your render settings with my next model, I would love to make such renders in Zbrush
It’s a shame that your final image has those jagged borders… I had the same problem once and it was caused by the DOF filter in Photoshop.
This is an amazing piece. Makes me want this for my desk… just to surround myself with stuff that inspires me.
Top row for me too! Great sculpt, and fantastic render; really pushing Zbrush’s BPR. Also, really generous of you to take the time to write that little tut up and attach the project. Great users like that are what make ZBC what it is!

Unfortunately I have no updates for Spawn … but I’m finishing the last details and I hope to post something more substantial in the coming days
Cool, thanks for the link to your site. Just a side note, if possible, you should have your site translated for your ENGLISH speaking fans (if you have time, if not, no big deal, the images are outstanding). That first video really cracked me up, that is some crap that bird takes. And wow, that crap REALLY ate the heck out of that wizard-
The second video was really neat too. Best.

As I mentioned in the preceding post, this work was done in order to partecipate to a contest.
In particular the contest was organized by www.charactersforum.com and is titled “My Superheroe portrait” ( yes is the same where Danko participates with the Joker that has already won the top row here on zBrushCentral)
If you are interested you could find very beautiful work in here
Here my final:
