Thanks! But you gotta remember that the majority of the work is done by the amazing artists at Valve, Gamingheads for putting it all together, and of course the ZBrushers who really make the source material come to life. I feel ashamed taking any type of credit for this kind of stuff, the best we can do is faithfully reproduce the original digital artwork and maybe add a tiny bit of flair.
Full color objet prints? I dunno what’s holding them back. They have minimum 600 DPI in XYZ. Multimaterial printing with the connex series. What’s stopping them making a CMYK+WB mode that can simulate a 3d offset printing press. I’m sure they’re working on it, maybe just a few more years? Fingers crossed? There are quite a few issues… material transparency+lightfastness, not sure how polyjet matrix works in practice… but maybe its hard multiplexing 6 materials into that matrix (7 if you count support material). Or maybe its hard dithering 6 drops of material within a 16 micron diameter voxel. So yah… dunno! It sounds non-trivial~
(and expensive)
And if you wanna look at it from a realistic standpoint. It’s going to cost your left nut to make that model. So if you wanted to make 5 of them, it would probably be cheaper to mould 5 of those copies and paint them. So we’re still back at square one~ Hoping for that miracle machine… high detail, full color, and cheap… thats a long time out. 15-40 years. In the meanwhile, yah… you gotta use the tools we have at hand.
It would also increase how much time you’ll have to model in order to take advantage of the new possibilities of coloring. In painting, we already do this. But you’ll have to layer your textures like a compositing in photoshop/pixel shader so that the machine will print your flesh mottle underneath, veining layer, and then final skin layer built up in transparent colored materials so get that nice effect SSS that everyone will want. So be careful what you wish for~
