100% ZBrush HotRod

Hi all, attached are some shots of a HotRod I have been working on, the entire car has been made using ONLY ZBRUSH. Still need much more work to be done. Hope you like.

Looking great Dragon! I love the dragon etching on the back and the detailing of the grill. One minor crit though, the body seems a bit washed out. It might be the matcap or maybe just the color, but you can’t really see the body contours the way it is.

Looking forward to more!

Cool Dragon. Nice job. reminds me of Big Daddy Roth stuff. Fun stuff.

Ezra

I really like the engravings! but the front wheels are a bit too distorted I think

VOODOODAD, thanks for commenting here (as you know, digging what your doing over at your post-;)) Believe it or not, those dragons, I downloaded from here at ZBrushCentral Downloads (alphas). I mirrored them, and then put some scales on them as well. I may change it though, I’ll see (just want to come up with my own etching-maybe).

The ‘wash out’ look has to do with several things… these were just quick screen captures while I was working in ZBrush, hence no fancy lighting. Also, have nothing reflecting onto the body (hope to do so with my final render). I am actually hoping to do some LightCap suff on it like the stuff Pixolator showed us some time ago with his first ‘Ready Set Render’ post: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?162330-Ready-Set-Render!
So I hope to achieve the same level of ‘glossy effect’ as he has in my final render. And, 32 Highboys really do not have much of body contours. If you look at one, their pretty blan on the sides (almost flat, without the fenders). Oh, ya, incase it does not show, the body started as a 32 HighBoy. But, I still need to put in the door jams and some other details these cars have… so I hope it all comes together at the end (as I cross my fingers-;)) Well see. Best my friend.

EZRA52, thanks for the kind words. Ya, Big 'DR" really had these cartoon cars down. He was something else.

STORMYSKY, thanks a million for dropping by. Ya, I know the tires look strange, but, believe or not, that’s my style. I have always drawn my tires in a ‘strange’ way. To be honest, I have in the past made them look even stranger-
But, it’s not all my fault, I have been influced by many Cartoon HotRod artists such as (already mentioned) Big Daddy Roth, George Troslely, and mainly… Lance Sorchik “Jersey Suede” (now this dude does some cool distortions). Check out what I mean by visiting his site (go to his 2000AD gallery): http://www.lancesorchik.com/
I distort rides like some caricture artists distort folks. And, I grew up reading an old magazine called ‘Cartoons’. That mag was something else.
Well, again, big thanks for poking around here. Best.

:+1: diggin the colors and engravings also - i remember that rearend !

It may just be my eyes too, Dragon. As I mentioned early in my thread I’m partially color-blind (red/green mostly) and it effects my perception of shading and things when certain colors are used. It makes polypainting an interesting proposition for me sometimes.
I forgot to mention in my earlier post that I really like the tires/wheels. The tread and wheel design are awesome.

One more thing; if you change the dragons, I will command all the dragons of Skyrim to come and infect your hard drive with dragon porn. You do NOT want that!

Good work as always, Gary (aka voodoodad)

Hey Gary, too cool to see ya in these parts- Funny, I was posting a comment over at your ‘post’ at the same time you were posting here at mine- Ya, I really like the dragons too, but, I am going to try something else and see if it works.
Yes, the rearend. The terrible part is, most of the work I did on it is facing away from us and will never be seen. But, that’s OK as I was only trying to play around with the new insert functions. Best.

Well, in your defense, it really isn’t your eyes. It just has to do with the things I pointed out. Things are kinda flat right now. I have a friend at work that also is color blind and tells me he has a hard time viewing certain 3D TV’s, have you ran across that?
Cool, glad you like the tires and treads (just trying to go with the theme of the flames coming from the dragons and running along side the car).
On your last comment, couldn’t stop laughing. By the way, that game looks awsome. Going to have to buy it for my PC some time soon (since I own a Wii). Have you played it? If so, what do you think of it?

Oh yeah I’ve played the hell out of Skyrim. It’s definitely worth the price as are all the morrowind games. Been neglecting both it and Star Wars The Old Republic due to practicing Zbrush too much, but you know how that is.

Btw, the pc version of Skyrim is very much the way to go even if you had another system. Graphics are stunning and you can download mods to make them even better. Just try not to take any arrows to the knees! (ummm… You’ll get the reference after you’ve played for a while, or you can probably google “arrow to the knee” if your curiosity consumes you)

Well I can sure appreciate that, but it does seem a bit off putting at first (especially since I’m not familiar with the style) but I really like the detailing (the dragon reliefs are exquisite!)

You know StormySky, I appreciate honest people. That’s cool that you don’t like my ‘funky’ tires. Heck, can you imagine if we all liked the exact same thing, what a boring world this would be. You know, some cartoon car artists deform their tires and some do not. Either way, both type are making money. Just depends on their audiance and mainly, if their happy with what their doing. Dang, guess I am going to have to keep those dragons- Best my friend.

Dragon, I figure we’re not that far apart in age. Do you remember the name of the company back in the late sixties/early seventies that put out those … I can’t remember if they were trading cards or stickers or what, but I do remember having a toy that was based on one… Anyway, they were like super-distorted hot rods with usually a big troll-like guy driving. Your hot rod reminds me of those and I was thinking of trying my hand at one after the mech is done. It’s driving me nuts trying to remember who did those things as I’d like to grab some images for reference.

Arrrg… could I possibly ramble more than I am?:o

 glad we got that clear! and the Dragons are great, keep them! its just the right level of detail, and the final image has character as well

I could possibly help you there, I dont have a specific real model, but there is a picture in ‘Introducing Zbrush 4’ by Eric Keller that has a vaguely similar caricatured hot rod with the troll character you mentioned, I’ll post a pic if your interested

Hey Gary, StormySky is correct, Eric does a step by step on doing one of those ‘Rat Fink’ rides in his book (I have it on my PC Kindle). Check out his book, he gives many cool tips (not just how to make a hot rod). And to answer your quesiton, EZRA52 already gave the hint as to who is the originator of those concepts… Big Daddy Roth. Do a search for him on google and you will see all his cool work. As to who made the models for him, ‘I think’ it was Revell?? Don’t know. But, the work your talking about is most Certainly Big Daddy Roths. Can’t wait for you to finish your Mech and, most certainly see you make a hot rod as well. Yes, your correct, we probably are around the same age… I will be 46 this 24th of January.

Indeed we are lol. I actually have Mr. Keller’s book on my color nook. And thanks to both of you for cluing me to Big Daddy Roth. Man that was driving me nuts last night.

Cool Beans-

Hey gang, quick update. I made the shocks for the rear of the car as you will see below. However, when I closed ZBrush and reopened it, I had lost my file (I saved it in three different places on my computer, I always do so as I am working). However, none of my backed up files worked. So, I lost around two hours of work. I found however, my own mistake. The file of my car has gotten so big, that I need more RAM. Yes, I attempted to decimate, but didn’t like all the strange stuff it does to the mesh. And I am NOT RETOPOING this thing. So, tomorrow I am buying more RAM to finish this darn thing-

I have also been working on a character to go along with my car. Below is what I have been working with (far from being finished i.e. need to work on the waist, adjust the muscles, make the legs more ‘tube’ like-see reference image I made below-etc).

The reference image I have been working from. Yes, I am looking to finish off the entire piece with a ‘stand’ i.e. possibly rock formations and some junk car parts thrown into the mix.
Test Wor and Sleek.jpg

And on a last note (this has nothing to do with ZBrush, but, thought folks would get a kick from it), I finished eating my Chili Cheese Hamburger Helper during my 30 minute lunch break yesterday, and created the piece below with the left over grease/water/chili cheese ‘color’. Used the fork on the side to draw a quick sketch of a mans head (hey, I felt inspired-;)).

Crits extremely welcomed (on everything). Best.

thats nice! sorry to hear about the shocks, zbrush can be a pain when it comes to saving/undoing

but that plate art is epic!!!
