YAFRAY- Not permitted in main forum

Hi all !

In a word yafray is AWESOME!

I, like allot of people here model in wings 3d for low poly things…

yafray is a free way to preview your models… it is a wonderful little raytraceing program that runs in the background…

so basically all you do is send the scene off to yafray, and after wings exports the XML file, you are free to continue modeling…

later the finished image is popped up right in wings for you to preview

here is a little thumbnail for the gallery…

hope you all like it…

the head was modeled in wings 3d… imported to Zbrush, and made into a polymensh… then subdivided and textured… then back to the first subdivision level and exported the model and the texture…

the scene is subdivided 2x by YAFRAY for this rendering…

Please feel free to post your Experience with Zbrush and yafray…

I am going to be playing with the displacement later on today… I will post my findings here

Zbrush complements every 3d application I own  Best money I ever spent  :+1:

Hi Polaris,

next good one is StrataCX, I imported this “ZB-buggie” there and rendered with GI…

great render!!!

how much dose strata cost?

Hi, Polaris

approx… $170 for upgrade from ver. 3.9

If you are interested, visit www.strata.com or www.stratacafe.com for details. Visit great user gallery too. Enjoy

Hiya POlaris, another Wings user here! Just wondering why you make polymesh after importing the Wings model? I’ve had a few weird mesh artifacts on Wings models in ZB so maybe the make polymesh thing avoids this? - Baz

Hi Abyssis
Such rendering is not possible in Zbrush ?

Hi Polaris
How is the Interface of YAfray ? Yafray Site
It’s a renderer line text input ?
Pilou

Hi BAZ,

The reason I make polymesh is that I subdevide the low resolution mesh for painting, so I get smooth surfaces for Projectionmaster to paint onto…

then after I am done painting model, I return the polymesh to the lowest subdevision layer to see how the texture will look on my low poly model…

If I did not turn it into polymesh I dont think I would be able to return to the lowest subdevision level with texture intact…

There is one thing I noticed… press the select whole Object mode in wings, select your model, rightclick… and select clean up… this has helped me a couple of times before…

Hi Frenchie Pilou

with Yafray alone it is a commandline renderer… but if you have wings, there is a GUI built into wings 3d for lighting and material properties…

This is why I am likeing Yafray so much… I can make a model in wings 3d, and adjust a few material settings and have a nice preview Render… later I can import to application Like Zbrush 2 and Truespace, that have superior rendering systems…

I just like the ability to see my models while I make them…

I have used wings for quite some time now, and in past I have exported them into other applications to get preview render… but now with yafray, I can see my model in its raytraced glory :)…

This is Helpful when modeling, to get a preview of how your model will look raytraced…

This is one of the nicest features about Z2, you get to see your model raytraced in real time as you model  :+1:

Yafray is not the greatest rendering engine in the world… but it is fast, free and Fun  :+1:

Have a good day everyone

Yes yes  I shall go to try that
And it’s more speedy than a best render in Zbrush ?
Pilou

What is the rapport with YAfray ?
A comparaison Wings3D + YAfRay / ZB2 ?
I am very slow minding

ummmm…

I like it because it is fast… I can be modeling, and do a quick render to see how it looks…

Then later after I am done modeling I import to Zbrush and Truespace for better render…

YAFRAY dose have some features that ZBrush and TRUESPACE dose not have…

Like Caustics, True Fresnel shader, and a GI sunshader (truespace has several GI shaders, no sun sky tho  ) …

I like YAFRAY as more for convieniance… Like when I am chatting on IRC while modeling… People ask me what I am working on… I just press F12 when I am in wings and it starts rendering… then I can post a picture really quick without exporting my model to a render engine

In the future, I am really planning on opening the Builder PRoject… when I do the Builder project I will be making hundreds of mapping models a day in wings… with yafray I can just pop out quick renderings of the objects for people to preview… it will save me allot of time importing and exporting things…

Soon there is going to be another rendering engine added to the wings list… TOXIC is going to have a plugin very soon

here are some fun renders I made as tests using yafray

BTW this is from my website, I am not taking up ZBC space with this stuff…

BTW yafray supports Refraction, reflection, and transmissions also  :+1:

I am going to be doing some Zbrushing here soon… I am practicing making low poly organic things in wings for the next few days…

Then I am going to be Zbrushing again

I tried to get Yafray once, but no luck so I deleted it…
I had really bad luck, it was so complicated to install it so I gave up. But, I really wanted to try it, today, still no luck! :frowning: the command and the DOS thing just drive me nuts!

Run the installer…

Then look on your hard disk for the yafray folder…

In the folder there is a readme file… read it… at the bottom is a way to add the path to the global variables in windows…

THis is pretty simple just copy an address and paste it realy … the instructions are pretty easy to understand…

after you add the global variable, you will see options in wings under render… also there are new options in material, and lights…

It is all done with a GUI if you use wings

no commandline anything

anyways… it is just good for preview renders anyways… Z2 dose a much better job of things IMHO

I am quite proud of myself for this one

The model was made in Zbrush quite some time ago with Zspheres

I finaly got the caustics somewhat working and teh IOR I have tweaked a bit better…

Yafray also supports HDRI Hemilight,Global Photon Light, and pathlight…

I got to work on my IOR and caustics…

[Gallery Entrie]

here is a thumbnail for the gallery thing…

well… I think I about got yafray mastered… time to make some nice sculptures to render with it

Thanks for the info Polaris, still waiting for ZB2 Mac so I’m not used to being able to go up and down subdivision levels. That must be sooooooo useful! - Baz

Sure No problem BAZ

Here is a new render…

I am getting the lighting down a wee bit better IMHO

My wings 3d is realy flying to new places with me… I am importing some other sculptures over for rendering in glass mode

Nice development with Yafray, Polaris.
Thanks for the Wings setup info. That command line business had put me off Yafray.

Alan.

Well it’s in Wings!

but I get Rendering error. On a Red cube. :frowning: Do I have to set up camera and lights first? OpenGl works.

to get yafray working, you have to add the directory name to your windows system enviroment path. this is cause it’s a command line renderer. also set your plug-in prefferences to say just “yafray”. Your path should handle the rest.

Off topic?

LOL!!!

I guess I should have used a comercial renderor!!!

LOL!!!

If you render your Zbrush models with uncomercial render engine it is off topic in main forum LOL!!!’

Funny I see models in main forum, under the Hilighted topic rendered in all kinds of other applications

This is funny there are things rendered in MAYA, and 3ds all the time in the main forum they are not marked as off topic…

Only diffrence is that I used a free render engine… LOL, guess I started showing up other applications too much… there is a real hate for GNU licence things in the software world… I think I am starting to feel it now…

guess they are trying to get rid of me like they did andreselroy…

hmmm, guess if I post aanything in this forum it will have to be 100% Z2… but even then I better watch what I say LOL! might get deleted for profanity, or nudity…

glad I stopped makeing Z2 tutorials and script files… this is the kind of thanks they give to frequent posters…

Oh well, Next month we get interviewed by Planet unreal, in a special Mod creation interview being held by PC GAMMER on our, and other mode developers content creation… i am definately going to mention this… I am not going to include any content from Z2, nor am I even going to mention I even use it…

when it comes time to say what i use, it will all be GNU licenced things. wich is better anyways… I want to show the Kids that they dont have to buy ANYTHING to be a CG artist… Hell they get better Tech support from free software anyways…

we have 1 other team member useing Z2, I am going to talk to him this afternoon… i will offer to buy him a copy of SILO if he keeps his mouth shut about Z2… JWF is going to look like a completely Z2 free team…

Where all the Z2 Hype would have been, will now be replaced with Wings3D and YAFRAY and GIMP, and SILO…

man this is a real burn! guess i started showing up some other applications with a free-Bee! LOL!

there are people in main forum posting from all kinds of other rendering engines…

I have been singled out. I feel this is very intentional.

Don’t get burned up about it Polaris, your posts have been about Yafray, other posts using non ZB renderers have been about the ZB model or about using ZB displacement or normal maps in other renderers. I know it’s a subtle distinction but it makes your posts off topic. Most forums have the same rules and there’s nothing wrong with the Community forum! I’m quite sure the mods will be happy for you to post your Yafray experiments here as much as you like!

Take care mate and try not to nurse a grudge over this. :o) - Baz

Nice post Polaris.

I appreciate your work and effort: but I think Baz has a point.

Anyway. Thanks for the info. And thanks GM770 for the advice as well. I did the Path bit, but not the Plugins bit. I’ll try that.

Alan.
