PolyPaint on Layers for me entirely broken

Hi guys.

At least for me the polyPaint on layers is entirely broken. Besides all the bugs that occur when you try to maybe split a layer into sculpt/polyPaint where it would usually mess up the polyPaint on that layer (not undoable).
I can’t ever make polyPaint not having the issue i show in the attached video.
Is there some magical trick to it. I could not figure out for about 20 years. I use ZBrush for a very long time. And i only found one other thread that deals with polyPaint here.:

I have the same issue with polyPaint on my objects when hiding them partially.

But i can’t even paint on layers without running into following issue which i always get
on every computer with zBrush i tried:

  • I use a polyPlane3D with makePolyMesh3D button pressed, then subdivided the plane.
  • Then i fillObject with white.
  • The first two strokes i paint without a layer. Just to show that it works fine (no alphaIssues there) without layers.
  • Then i undo the two strokes and add a layer.
  • And paint again 2 strokes where on the second stroke you get those annoying hard edges where the paint of the first stroke was only applied less than 100%.

Is there anybody out there who can help circumventing that issue somehow.
Or does not get it at all ?
I usually create a new layer to be able to paint without that issue but at some point
merging layers messes up polypaint as well.
I have handed in bugReports to pixologic and they replied ( as they really try to help with most stuff) but on that topic i really don’t know as they never actually admitted
that there was something wrong with it, nor did they adress those issues in any way.
I always thought i am doing something wrong.
So i am stuck.
I hope somebody can help.
Because polyPaint on layers would be so important for me.

Thanks and have a nice day.
Stay safe!

Fill the newly created layer (in record mode) with color and material first before painting on it to “prime” it. I’m honestly not certain if this is working as intended or not, but the hard edged stroke thing seems to be caused by a material mismatch between the underlying mesh object and the layer. Filling the layer with color/mat fixed this issue for me.

Hi Spyndel,

thanks for trying to help, sorry for the late answer.
Unfortunately priming the layer does not work neither, besides you can fill a layer only manually by painting over it, the fillObject button doesn’t really fill a layer ( would only colorize already painted on pixels and does nothing to empty layers).

When i primed it manually by first filling it by paintbrush using a dragRect stroke with focalShift -100 with white and rgb set to 100, then doing the same while holding ALT to remove the paint again as i need transparency ( there is not much of a point in using layers with polyPaint when you fill them completely so you don’t see what is beneath them.)
But after removing the paint again the problems were different because when i then paint i get a halo around my strokes with the color i primed it with.

You ment there was a material mismatch, i don’t think layers pick up material changes they are only for sculpt/paint/mask/(animdata).
Tho i don’t even paint with materials (only RGB is on).

So when you paint you don’t use layers ? or just never run into that problem.
Or that other problem where it would jumble your paint when you hide portions of your mesh ?

Do you know of videos where they paint on (fresh) layers without any problems? I actually never saw one.

But thanks for trying to help :).

Have a great weekend, stay healthy.
