ZuglyDuck

Heya all,

I decided to try and create the UglyDuck picture again, after learning a thing or two about ZBrush. And here’s the result:

(The first version was drawn with the ZBrush demo, and if you’re curious, you can view it in this thread.)

Many thanks to Mentat7 for showing me how to model a duck bill using ZSpheres. I decided to start a new one from scratch (instead of using Mentat7’s script) just so I’d really learn how to do it.

I also used some Trishader materials on the head and the bill, and the tongue. They give a nice natural feel.

The head and the bill are actual 3D models slapped into the canvas. The eyes and irises are flattened spheres, and the “feathers” on the head are created with the HookBrush (and so is the nostril). The tongue is a bent, flattened, slightly tweaked cone.

It’s not quite proportioned like the original, but I guess we could say he’s grown up? The picture looks correct as it is, but the MultiMarker tool that contains the head, the bill and the eyes, looks mighty weird when rotated and viewed from other directions.

I had some difficulty with the underside of the bill. There’s nasty creasing which I couldn’t remove with any Zpaint tools, I tried smudging and different brushes… it only made it worse. :frowning:

Comments welcome.

/me sits down and waits for a horde of rabid Disney lawyers to attack…

Hi Skaven
Great cute model
For eliminate creasing you can try the “Cloner Brush”
Page 139 of the manual
I think you can make something !
(take a little size of brush and Alpha appropriate and maybe Zadd off)and don’t hesitate to Zoom with “+” or"-" for more precision

I really like that Skaven. The duck bill turned out great. You can move individual objects that have been multi-marked. Simply drag the multi-marked object out onto the canvas and enter edit mode. Then when you enter move, rotate, simply move the mouse to the object you are wanting to affect…you should see the little gray point signifying the mark of the object. You can then move, rotate etc (depending on which mode you are in). You should experiment with it first …it takes a little getting used to.

Very nice model !!!
Great job Skaven!! :+1: :+1:

Thanks for your comments! The Cloner tool? Good that you reminded me - I haven’t actually even tried that one yet.

Mentat7, thanks for the tip… I tried repositioning and rotating the parts, but concluded that this is a model that looks good only from one direction.

The Repositioning seemed to work strangely… after moving the parts and pressing Reposition and drawing the Multi-Marker tool again, the eye spheres seemed strangely out of place and I had to rotate and move them into place again. Hmm, odd.

Anyway, here’s the model after a few minutes of repositioning:

Maybe my next work will be a bit better shaped. Cartoony characters like these are kinda hard to make fully 3-dimensional anyway, no?

Hi Skaven
For the ceasing you can try also in “Edit mod” select the part (with Ctrl)who is some wrong,
divide it and smooth it(twice) and the creasing maybe will desapear !

Terrific cartoony duck- lot’s of personality. :+1:

Really nice Skaven! :+1:

Cool toon duck Skaven… very good modeling. You are learning really quickly! ;~)
Take care,
Michael

That is one very nice model. Very clean and crisp. I could also see this guy in one of those old cartoons. Very nicely done!

Hey, thanks for the comments and pats on the back, everyone.

How come the first picture didn’t appear in the gallery? I guess it might be because of the fact that the night I was making my post, I had just uploaded the image and written the post, but when I pressed “Post New Topic”, my ISP failed me. The connection was lost, and I couldn’t make the post before the next day from a different computer, at work. So the picture resided in the “uploaded files” directory over the night. Well, according to Murphy’s Law, the connection failed at the perfect time I guess…

Anyway, here are a couple of experiments. First, I tried hand-drawing the outlines on the duck using a fake transparent layer:

However, the outlines look pretty rough. Maybe my hand isn’t steady enough to draw flowing outlines (I did use a tablet, though). :o Maybe ZBrush’s strengths lie elsewhere than line drawing.

I then tried creating a cartoon shader type of a material:

The black outline took a while to figure out, but it’s made by setting Reflectivity to 100, setting the Reflection map to a solid black texture, and drawing the RefCurve so that the black is only reflected in the edges of the object. And the Diffuse curve is set to look like a staircase. Here’s the cartoon shader material I used just in case you’re interested.
