ZTL file saved from ZB 3.2 for OSX can't be opened in ZB 3.5 r3 in Windows

Hi!

I saved ztls (zbrush tools) in zbrush 3.2 for osx. And I noticed that even though I saved the ztools in their lowest subdivision levels, i still have around 100mb+ filesize which should have (as per experience) dropped dramatically since it’s saved in their lowest subdivision levels. But it didn’t matter whether the tools were at their highest or lowest subdiv levels, the filesize remained the same. I thought maybe this is just an issue with the osx version of zbrush. So I decided to re-save the tools in zbrush 3.5 r3 for windows. But everytime I load the ztl files, I get an error, then zbrush crashes. The error dialog says: Error while reading m_pTxtr. The next line says “Object:” and then there was nothing there. Last line says “Please email us at…bla bla”. I dunno what exactly is going on since I was using the latest version of zbrush in windows and 3.2 at osx. As far as I know newer software should be backwards compatible in terms of file formats right? Please do help me with this.

I’ve checked with the development team on this and have some information:

1) You no longer need to switch subdivision levels before saving. ZBrush will save with the lowest possible filesize regardless of level. However, for this to work there must be no hidden parts of the model. Also, the files will be larger than they would have been in 3.1 because 3.2+ uses a higher accuracy level of details and the saved data file needs more space to store this data.

2) Files from 3.2 should be able to be loaded into 3.5 without problem. If this is not working we will need more information regarding the file. It would also help if you could provide us with a copy of the problem file.

I just received a file I am supposed to work on from a trusted source and I am having the same file reading problems described above. I can’t open it at all. When I try to open it ZBrush gives me an error message (in Win ZBrush 3.5 R3), File reading error m_pTxtr then asks me to email support about the problem. I can provide a copy of the file if absolutely required.

Hi there SkulptorGeist! I resolved this issue by opening the file in zbrush 3.2 for mac (where it was possibly created) then removing all the textures including the polypaint. Saved it again to a ztl file. Then open the new ztl file in zbrush 3.5. Hope that helps. :smiley:

Hi guys

I just encountered the same issue with my model i built in 3.2 on my mac.
Now that i’m opening it on my mac (which is really powerfull) zbrush crashes, i tried 3.5 on windows but it gives me same error.
Any chance someone can open that file for me?
