ZSpheres beginner. placement and unexpected rotation

dear forum,

im new to Zbrush and after the basics i’ve moved into Zsphere
and am trying to model a simple cat-like form.

i want it to be fat and have short legs, big head etc.

however im having trouble to produce a nice and tidy form even in
the preview mode (a-key). the meshes either go unwanted shape or
overlap with each other.

as simple a form as 1.jpg,
while result being close to what i wanted as shown in 2.jpg ,
i can’t seem to solve the mesh problem (where leg connects to body).
i’ve tried resizing, moving Zspheres around, results werent as desired. 3.jpg.

another big problem is that sometimes when i create new Zsphere,
it rotates by itself and creates unexpected distortions to the model.
4.jpg and 5.

sometimes when i drag out a new Zsphere it even Rotates Existing
Zspheres(affecting more than 1)automatically,
leavnging a total mess on the mesh.

im pretty sure i was in draw mode and my view was shift-snapped view.
what am i doing wrong?

thank you

One thing to make sure of when you’re working with ZSpheres is to always have symmetry active. This will help you keep ZSpheres positioned along an axial alignment. Without that, you can get all sorts of wierdness.

I recommend that you visit the ZClassroom. (Link is in my signature.) It has some great tutorials on ZSpheres.

dear aurick,

thank you so much for the swift reply.
i did go through ZClassrooms tutorials many times before i post my questions. as well as many other tutorials i can find.

i’ve done some more fast trials and i hope this clears my question a little more.

so i’ve created the frontal limb without a problem, 3 ZSpheres.
now when i try to make the hip and the other 2 legs,
i did exactly the tutorial said, shift-snap to face the back of the ZSphere,
and dragged a new ZShpere on the old one,
thenwith symmetry on, i dragged the other 2 legs.

after some simple placement, i switch to preview (a-key)
and there goes my problem again.

i know its too fat, overlapping and all. but the real problem is that
they obviously got twisted by 387 degrees or something,

i really like ZSphere, or ZBrush as a whole, can’t wait to have fun
making stuff. i envy people who can create detailed dinosaurs
with like 200 ZSpheres, while im having trouble stuck with 4.

please help me

The root (first) ZSphere has no geometry of its own. It’s a placeholder. That’s why you need more ZSpheres before you’ll see anything other than that hemisphere. This is also why you can’t delete the root.
