having the zsphere mesh actually push in and make an indentation isn’t really that important. Getting the topo that you want to be able to have loops in the eyes and such is much more important. you can always just push the mesh back into the head. Remember that zspheres are an ends to a means, not the end all be all.
If you want the mesh to push in, you can always just turn on the classic skinning method.
I beg to differ. I’m having the same problem and it’s an annoyance. I’ve gotten very used to making cavities by indenting the zspheres. I found it to be very useful.

Ok, I found the answer. Make sure “use classic skinning” is activated in the adaptive skin dialog box.
