Zsketch...why doesn't sketch conform to background subtool?

I’ve set up a zsketch various times with success, but I don’t know why sometimes the zsketch won’t stick to the subtool in the other layer. Here’s my workflow…

I import my object – in this case a head and bust to use as a surface to sketch some hair.

I append a zphere and scale it down some so it doesn’t get in the way.

I select the zsphere subtool layer and activate “edit sketch”.

I start drawing, and the zketch tubes don’t lay on the head surface. They get painted inside the geometry. SOmetimes, it’ll only sketch on the small zsphere I scaled down.

Sometimes, it works properly, but less often than I’d like.

Sometimes, I can’t zsketch after a few minutes and have to try again with a fresh scene.

Am I doing something wrong?

Here’s something I noticed also…when I’ve been sketching for a while and do some smoothing, once I go back to sketching again things are weird. The sketch happens deeper in the background object.

You need to turn off the Transform>Ghost button (on the right of the interface). The Transp button is fine but it won’t work with Ghost transparency on. Also, the Brush>Depth>Imbed settings affect how deep the ZSketch spheres are embedded in the subtool.

Thanks…that helped a lot. I also turned off lazy stroke.
