zsketch depth buggy in R6

I made these two videos with R2 and R6p2.

In R2 the depth works as expected.
In R6p2 depth appears to not work for negative values.

Both videos had depth set to -100

First R2, where it works as intended:

I will post the second video in a following post. Not allowed to host two videos in one post for some reason.

Then R6p2 where it is broken:

I’m using 4R6 P2 and mine is working normally.

Thank you. Maybe something happened with my install. I will try and troubleshoot on my end.

I tried R5, same problem. Then R4 and it worked as it should. So it seems something changed between R4 and R5. I’ll try some different drivers here, just in case.

Are you using Draw Size Dynamic mode? If so, try turning it off.

I am using freshly initialized (and reinstalled) settings, so everything is default. I tried with and without dynamic draw size, but it made no noticeable difference. It might be something since R5 that is not entirely compatible with my system, since 4R4 works fine. I was going to change video drivers (currently 320.18), but then I read that zbrush is entirely CPU driven, so I gave that a pass.

I’m on win 7 64bit Ultimate N, 32GB, GTX 580, I7 2600k btw.

Also, depth works fine with the insert brushes.

The only thing I can think of is that for some reason your tablet input is not working when you use ZSketch.

Perhaps, but I tried both with mouse and tablet with same result. Also tried with version 4R4 where it worked as it should, both mouse and tablet. So something is off somewhere, but I doubt it’s the input.

I have noticed that at negative values, the depth is altered, but only such that at -100 depth, the zsketch spheres go exactly half way into the surface.

Ok, minor breakthrough! Disregard the last post. Apparently how deep the brush embeds is dependent on how large the zsphere was drawn at, put into edit mode and begun zsketching on.

If I draw a small zsphere to begin with, press T and then shift-A, I get fat tubes of zsketch on top, even at -100. But if I draw a much larger zsphere, press T and shift-A, I can get depth of -100 to look the way it should. If I make it TOO big, even values of -90 or -80 will not show, because the zsketch is embedded too far inside.

The crazy thing is, once the depth works properly, I can start a new document with a new zsphere, even a small one, and the depth works properly still. No fat tubes or deep embeds.
If I restart the application, however, I will have to “calibrate” it again, by doing too small, too big and just the right size zsphere.

So far this hack works. Seems a bit unstable when editing armatures, but it might be workable. Needs more testing.
I seriously cannot believe I am the only one with this issue, since it feels very much like something buggy.

I might have spoken too soon, because even if the afore mentioned “hack” works, right now another effect has manifested: strokes that start out accurate increase in size as the brush moves away from the origin point of the brush stroke and then decrease in size if moved back towards the origin point.

Could even do some fancy effects like this, entirely unintended and buggy, but interesting

I just did an initialize of zbrush, and now the strokes work as they should. The effect gone. All dandy. Until restarting the application of course.

Rarely touched ZSketching since getting the software, had it 2 years . Many other ways to skin a cat.

That is very true. I am new to zbrush and wanted to emulate the look of some of the cool concept art I have seen, while doing my own creations. I will explore other parts of the program to be sure. Especially since zsketching appears to be off limits for reliable work on my system, at this time.

Was a solution ever found here? I’m having the same problem, but can’t find a fix.
