Zprojection Help

Hi there,

I’m trying to project a high res detail model onto a plane to extract a really good normal map from it. I’m using zbrush 3.5 R3. Ive noticed that the tranpose tools don’t work on zproject anymore? The geometry has to be directly on top of the plane in order to work? Is there a way to fix that so i can “clone” to parts of the plane.

Also I noticed that zproject isn’t that strong? if the detail mesh is a little high from the plane then it won’t project anymore? Is there a way to fix that? I tried subdividing the plane an awful lot in order to try to project it but then I would be using up alot of memory. Any information would be helpful thanks! Still a little new to zbrush 3.5

Transpose works for projecting whats on the canvas to the object. For projecting subtools, the position of the subtool (relative to the object on which it is projected) controls the position of the projection.

Yes, it should be a subtool of the plane and it should be as high off the plane as you want the ultimate height to be or higher.

Yes, either move the plane or the subtool you’re projecting relative to each other. The move transpose tool is good for this.

It’s as strong as it is relative to the plane and the z-intensity slider. It should project if you’re on the right side of your plane. Weird things happen if you start working from the wrong side of one-sided object. In other words, use z-project when you are on the visible side of your plane when “double” (Tool->Display Properties->Double) is off.

Thank you so much Kerwin! that was a big help!

“Transpose” with Zbrrush will transfer color from the canvas to you mesh. To do this, from an object, snapshot the object to the canvas (Shift-S or the snapshot icon on the Transform Menu). You can move the canvas around when NOT in edit mode by the “~” (tilde) key.

To transfer sculpting details from one sculpture to another, use the subtool method by aligning tools, described here: http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Tutorial:ZProject_and_SubTools

To change alignment, move one subtool with transpose tools relative to the other.

(Since I’m usually working on a subtool and using another subtool as my source sculpture, I simply move subtool I’m working on in relation to my source subtool.)
