ZProject brush malfunction

Hi,

I’m having a problem with the ZProject brush smearing the mesh perpendicular to the orientation of the brush and face normals, up and down the surface, instead of the mesh being displaced outward/inward in the direction of the normal axis. It only started malfunctioning this morning, before I was able to use the ZProject brush on this model and scan data, and it was working fine.

It seems like a bug, but it doesn’t go away when I restart ZBrush 3.1. Does anyone have any idea of what may be causing this problem?

Specs:
Dell M6400
Windows Vista Business x64
Quadro 2700m
8GB of RAM
ZBrush 3.1

Best,

Erin.

honestly i hate that brush its so messy. i prefer to use morph target and the projectall feature.

  1. store morph target.
  2. project all (subtool palette)
  3. switch morph back to your original sculpt
  4. paint in using morph brush the areas you want projected, avoiding where you got spikes after project all

Hi spaceboy412

Thanks for your response. It’s a good workflow, but I’ve already done most of the work with the zproject brush. I was wondering if there was something that I could do to reset the brush so that it would work properly again rather than using project all(It takes about 4 hours to use project all on this mesh). I only have about 15 minutes of work to finish on this file, so I was hoping that I could keep using the ZProject brush.

I agree with you though, when project all works, and if it works quickly, it can be a much easier workflow.

Best,

Erin.

projectall should not take that long. you could hide the parts on both meshes that you’ve already done and do the projectall thats fast.
restarting zbrush should’ve reset the zproject brush. if i remember there is an issue with the transpose line, i think you need to show it then click on it to make it disappear otherwise it screws up the zproject. its in the forums somewhere…

might be worth doing a quick search and browsing through the threads.

Hi spaceboy412,

that’s exactly what I’m doing right now, but it’s not responsive and it’s currently showing the message “projecting mesh details” on the progress bar at the top. I’ll wait for a while and see if it gives me a progress bar.

Part of the reason that it may be taking so long is that I have 2 million poly animation mesh receiving details from a 2 million poly scanned model.

The model is also a tree like structure, so it may be screwing with the ray normal projection/distances that I assume ZBrush uses for the project all tool.

Best,

Erin.

Thanks for the link to the thread. I had read about the action line, and I tried to make it as short as possible, but I’m not sure how it would have been disturbed in the first place, because I wasn’t using transpose at all.

I just wish that there was some way to reset the ZProject brush so that it would work properly again.

Best,

Erin.

Unfortunately, it was still stuck on “projecting mesh details” up until just now, so I killed the session of ZBrush. I’ll try to reboot and see if that makes any difference.

Best,

Erin.
