Zproject Brush 4.0 and 4.2

Hey guys,
Reading a lot of info on the zproject brush. Did it work on the mac in 4.0? I cannot seem to get it to do anything even following several different tuts.
In 4.2 it works by placing the source object into the mesh that I want to xfer the detail to.
The videos I have seen show a plane and face being used and thats what i have tried using. They show the head and plane next to each other and the ability to project the face multiple times onto the plane, I cannot get anything to work that way.
Any input on what I may be doing wrong here? As far as I can tell I have followed step by step.

The Zproject brush works as expected for me in R2, with the source mesh appended as a subtool to the target mesh, though I can’t speak to any platform discrepancies.

Remember to hold down ALT as you brush if the source mesh is actually inside the target mesh, as you need to push down to that detail, rather than build up in that case. Make sure ZADD is on, with z intensity set to full. Make sure the reference subtool is visible in the subtool palette.

I cant get Zproject to work either in respect of RGB. It worked fine in 4 on the mac and now just colours black when used in 4.2.
