Zmodeler + retopology: Snap to Surface Broken?

Zmodeler Brush:
Points->Move–>Brush Radius–>Snap to Surface

I am trying to use the Zmodler Brush to re-topo as shown from Joseph:

Any point I select, and I am trying to “Snap to a Surface from another Subtool” - it just doesn’t snap.

I remember it worked in older versions. I am using the latest available version 2023.1 and it seems to be broken.

Any bug fixes and workarounds for that?
Or what else am I missing here?

Thanks for any help,
appreciate it!

Hi @FattyBull ,

I don’t immediately experience any problems with this in ZBrush 2023, with either edge > extrude or Point> Move.

Please keep in mind that the surface snapping is not enabled by default, and you will have to enable to option for each feature. Also while the surface of the mesh will emit a light attraction for the points, it is possible to pull them off the surface of the mesh if you deliberately try to do so.

that’s odd. yes, of course, I activated the Snap To Surface tab.
zmodeler_brush_points_do_not_snap_to_surface.zip (30.3 KB)

I attached the ztool, perhaps that helps. If not, I guess I do need to record a video for you to showcase.

Hi @FattyBull ,

In this case I think it’s a matter of starting with too large of a polygon and attempting to snap it to a very complicated and uneven low poly surface. Remember the polygon can only “fasten” itself at the four points. If there are differences in elevation at those four point locations, it’s going to clip through the geometry in places.

There is no great way to “snap” a pizza box to a life-sized curved statue of a person. It just wont be able to follow the surface. However, a series of matchbook covers laid end to end works much better:
