Zbrush won't switch materials in Colorize mode

So I started Polypainting a while back and I decided today to start over. However, when I go into Colorize and try to change from say a White Cap shader to a Flat Color, it won’t switch the shader. It keeps showing the shader (MapCapWhiteCavity) that I used from my first PolyPaint long ago. How do I fix this?

It’s also causing my colors to not work correctly. Black is not black…it’s like a strange grayish red. All I really want to do is reset the entire model. I tried exporting it out as an obj and then reimporting it, but that destroyed my subdivision levels. Very frustrating.

Go to the Texture pallet on the left and choose Texture Off. That will remove your texture map from the ZTool. Now disable Colorize and choose the MatCap you want to use. Set the foreground color to white to get the standard hue for that MatCap.

The strange colorization you’re seeing is the MatCap doing its job. Your texture map is still there, but each time you apply a different MatCap your surface is going to react to light differently, somtimes appearing more specular, sometimes appearing to have more of a reddish SSS property. When you choose a MatCap, don’t choose it based on its color, choose it with this thought in mind: “How do I want my surface to react to light? Which MatCap is the closest approximation of that?” You can always change the color.

Hope that helps, good luck.

All you need to do is select the FlatColor material and turn on Draw>M. Now press Color>Fill Object. This removes any polypainted materials
without affecting the color that you’ve painted. When you switch back to other materials, they will now update immediately.
