Hello Zbrush community!
About a week ago, I thought I wanted to learn abit more about high quality rendering. Like alot of those pictures presented in galleries here at Zbrushcentral.com. So I started modelling abit in Zbrush, just to get a mesh with some fine detail on. Below are the maps I use for it;
Texture map
Displacement map (32 bit adaptive)
Normal map (tangent space)
Cavity map, baked into texture map inside Zbrush and exported a seperate one for the diffuse option AND using it as a reflection map with the blinn shaders with mental ray.
All my maps are 4096x4096 maps.
I use Goz to bring everything into maya 2009 (32-bit) and I’m setting myself up to render.
Now this is where my issues start.
I use high quality settings for my render, and my fine details are not showing up. Let me go through my settings quickly. I’ve searched for a week and found multiple “answers” but none has worked out the way I wanted.
The mental ray render

-Production quality settings
-Using approximation editor for my mesh, set to N subdivision 3 or 4, parametic.
-Featured displacement turned off.
-Lighting: Using ray tracing.
In my renders, It looks like the general shape is achieved, but the fine detail ain’t there like it was in Zbrush. I’ve followed Scott Spencers video about displacement renders in maya, I’ve done those step. He points at the cavity map solution for bringing in more fine details, but it doesn’t seem to do the trick for me. Someone also said maya can give bloating effects with displacement maps, but in that case these bloating effects are super minor and are just bloating the details.
If you want to check my settings more carefully, I’ve attached the maya-file and some images on the side, including the high poly tool from Zbrush and all the maps I use.
I know this might not be a pure Zbrush issue, but I know alot of people know about rendering that post here, so I’m hoping for the best.
As I overall also like to get better at rendering, if there’s any links and additional information that you know of when it comes to rendering, may it be whatever concerning how to achieve high quality renders, I’m all ears.
I’ve added my maya-file, Ztool and maps to a dropbox link, click the link to start the download.
