ZBrush Slow

I find zbrush very slow, specifically at Undos and any operation with the layers (adding, moving, toggling, etc). I have 24gigs or ram, my virtual mem on an ssd, a fast processor, zbrush set to 4gb compact, etc.

I have a 10mil poly sculpt but I don’t think that is the problem. I read that it may be an issue with Zbrush not handling layers that well as i generally sculpt with 5-10 layers active throughout a sculpt. I see the little disk icon all the time and if i try to do anything during that time i get a “Zbrush Executable not responding” dialogue - which i have to wait out to begin work again.

Please help as this makes sculpting very tedious.

Thanks.

Well…if you have 5-10 layers and you’re working on a mesh that is 10 million points you’re actually holding on to the vertex location information for all 10 million points, for each layer. So you’re hitting 50-100 million points held in RAM, which is why you’re seeing slowdown. Is there a reason your mesh is that dense and you’re using 10 layers?

The mesh has to be that dense to capture all the hair detail (animal). It is very optimized too as I Zremeshed many times in order to get the density more where i needed it more.

I try to merge layers as often as possible, but I find sculpting on a series of layers is very nice.

I find it strange that Undo and layer related actions are the only real slow down issues that I have (but they are significant).

1 subtool? Insane. Break it up or hide parts you don’t need to see. Are you trying to sculpt in the hair or apply as a texture map? There’s a fiber material as well as fibermesh…workflow/methods can make or break you. Happy New Year ZBrushing.

I am sculpting the hair since it will end up being created in the real world.

Unfortunately, it cannot be broken up, but i do hide parts of it while I’m working. Looks like the crux of the problem is my layers, which i will just have to merge more often. Thanks for the input beta and Doug.
