Zbrush -Shader?

Hi everybody,

I want to enter a contest and the rules say:
"Final entry will be in two parts: …a still render of your Creature or Critter model – (simple shader only, no textures allowed) "

I didn´t know what´s a shader. I only read the word in the Zbrush material palette. I always thought it´s maybe just another word for material but I wasn´t sure so I asked and I got this answer:

“A shader is the way materials/colours can be applied to your 3D objects. Most software, if you look in the shading/texturing/materials window you will be able to create things called “Lambert”, “Blinn”, etc… theses are shaders. Normally you would pick one and then add your textures onto them, but for this contest, they only want you to pick one of these shaders and render it”

Erm… yes  I´m more confused than before.

The only thing I understand is that the model shouldn´t be textured.
Since I´m using Zbrush only and never touched any other app before I have no idea what´s a “Lambert” or a “Blinn”.

My question is: what does this mean for me?
Can´t I do everything within Zbrush?

Help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

just use the basic materials and you’ll be fine. Matcaps will probably work as well.

just make it a solid color.

Good news! :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:
The answer I got before was soo complicated.
Thank you very much.

Me again  ehmmm… I got another answer now and I´m confused again.

[color=paleturquoise]“They are basic material settings. All you really would do is render it flat shaded […]
No textures means that the objects texture would have to come from its geometry, not it’s bump maps, normal maps, diffuse/Colour maps etc[.…]

I have no idea what that means…
Can´t I just model as always… use a standard material… and render the finished untextured model with Zbrush´s best render then?

yes, just sculpt in zbrush and you’ll be fine.

They are refering to people using other applications, such as MAX, MAYA, XSI, etc.

If all you have is geometry in Zbrush, no texture or polypaint, then you will be fine.

Ok so it is very easy. The things they told me sounded like another language grin
Good luck for me that Zbrush is basically very easy to understand. More art than technique.

Thank you very much, goast666. :+1:
