My name is Jared and I am a 3d artist in the gaming industry. I am also in the process of getting my teaching certification. I have been learning a lot this semester about issues in contemporary art. For the past 3 months I have been studying and obsessing about zbrush and specifically the sculpting aspect.
I have really enjoyed this time to push myself, reflect and compare it to traditional sculpting. I have come to the conclusion that the digital arts is in fact a true form of art. Many critics and artists don’t view the digital as real art. Their argument is that computers do the work for you. This in fact is not true. Although computers and software can make different aspects a lot easier, you still need to have a solid understanding of form, color, lighting, technical understanding, etc. You also need a solid background in traditional drawing skills. Learning and using software is simply like learning a new medium. It takes time, patience, discipline and a lot of failure to get better. Like all artists, pushing our limits is what drives us to keep going. Like many of us we grew up with a sketchbook and pencils in hand. With the evolution of technology in the entertainment industry so does our skills and process evolve. Nothing will ever take place or have the same feel of physically sketching on paper, painting on canvas or physically sculpting something in real life.
I believe that we cannot judge what is or what is not art. Even if we don’t particularly like one style, that doesn’t mean it isn’t art to someone else. To me art is the creation of something that can evoke a feeling or mood to the viewer. I will always be a fan and lover of all art styles. I appreciate the skills, creativity and methodologies of others. I love making art because I find it unbelievably fun to use my creativity and grow my skills at the same time. I feel so incredibly lucky to be able to be an artist as my profession. I wake up every day excited and eager to go to work because I get to make something cool. How many of us can actually say that about our jobs?
Here are some of the sculpts that I worked on.
