Zbrush questions

I have tried prior versions of Zbrush trials but I was always a bit turned off, perhaps by the process of learning the program. However I just watched the Zsketch tutorials and they look phenomenal . I have a few questions regarding Zbrush that I’d like to find answers to before I invest in it fully.

Is Zsketch available in any of the trials? I am using Zbrush 3.1 but I don’t see any option for that.

Does Zbrush provide rendering options or must I import files to another program?

Can you import non Zbrush format models for conversion into Zbrush?

Thanks

Zsketch should be available in the 3.5 r3. Look for a trial version of this update.

Zbrush has some rendering options. You can render to PSD or a .MOV turntable. The rendering options are very basic, but provide a good way to present your model with the highest level of detail possible.

My preferred method is generally to import an .OBJ from another program such as Maya or 3DS Max. I think this gives you the best control over the topology from the beginning and makes the entire process much easier. It’s also, in my humble opinion, the best method for laying out your UV’s. Unwrap your model before importing to Zbrush.

I hope that answers your questions. Zbrush is fantastic and the quality of my character models rose dramatically once I began using it. The interface can be a little baffling at first though.

Thanks, lately the interface has baffled me. I’m understanding zspheres, except i’ve had issues with some objects and simple navigation. For example, if I use zspheres to create something, then hit A to view it, I’m unable to get back to making more zspheres, instead it makes a new zsphere that doesnt mesh with the previous creation.

Similarly, if I’m editing a single object, and I deselect it or create a new object on accident, I can’t get back into draw mode for that specific object. Is there something I am missing for selection?

I’ve had some issue with the view port as well, is there a way to set the document default size to something larger? my screen starts tiny on a 30" monitor.

Thanks for the help.

Just select your tool again from the tool palette, draw it on the canvas and press Edit (T). It will be exactly the same as when you last used it.

As Richard said, once you deselect it, you have to drag out a new copy. Hit CTRL-N to clear the canvas, select the tool and drag out a new copy. Hit “T” to return to edit mode.

ah that helps, I didn’t realize I had to clear the canvas first
