Zbrush Not Enough Memory Issue

My PC spec:
Core i7, 860, 2.8Ghz
8 Gb rams
ATI FireGL v.5600 (512 rams)

As the title suggested, Zbrush screams for a memory error every time I try to create a 4k Displacement map. I have a low poly mesh, in which, I subdivide it to level 8 as I sculpt, and it gets to 18 Mill polys. When I bring back the model to level 1 and try to create a 4K displacement map, Zbrush pops up a warning message that my machine hasn’t enough memory.

I went down to level 7 and deleted level 8 and tried again to create a 4k displacement map and it works.

I always thought that 8 Gb rams would be enough, so my question is… am I doing something very wrong here?

If I upgrade to 16 Gb rams, will Zbrush still tells me I don’t have enough memory to create a level 8, 4k, displacement map?

Any suggestions / feedbacks is appreciated.

Thank you.

Upgrading to 16 GB RAM will not solve your problem as ZBrush is a 32 bit app and will only use 4GB RAM max, even on a 64 bit OS. What are your -Preferences > Mem- settings? You shouldn’t use any more than the default 4 Doc and Tool Undo. If that is set higher it will quickly eat up all your available RAM. Try making your displacement map without any Undo history stored and see if that works. i.e. Init ZBrush > redraw ztool > create displacement map.

Hi zber2,

I don’t think I was actually thinking when I asked about the 16 Gb rams. Of course it wouldn’t make any difference since zbrush 4 is 32 bits only… wondering where was I when I asked that.

I have compact memory set to 3500 and the rest as default.
I’m going to try your suggested method once I get a minute and report back.

Thank you for the reply / tips.

Your welcome CGicore! Also see this postabout best preferences/mem settings.

Thank you very much mate. That definitely did the trick.

Hello
I’m having the same memory error issue - thanks for the link above.
Though I thought ZBrush is already a 64 bit application.
For those heavy memory craving application(s) like ZBrush I cant unterstand why Pixologic step back to 32bit? I remember there was a 64 bit version in ZB2-days available.

Hi, im having the same problem of memory and couldnt solve it with the post above.

Issues appears when i try to get a displacement or a normal map from my model.

The model has 14.398 mil TotalPoints. With 7 Subdivisions lvls.
Store morph target at SubD 5 > Displacement > memory error.

Compact mem set to 4096 .

Windows 7 > 64 bit > 8 G Ram.

Guessing this shouldnt be happening.
I could run the displacement if i delete SubD 7, but then i lost the fine detail.
