Zbrush magic went into photoshop :)

Ok I found some thing very weird

I was trying to mask(or even erase) an image over an image,( almost same without the characters) in photoshop.

I noticed something which should happen in zbrush and not in photoshop. (or maybe I am working too much   )

When we erase canvas filled with material and depth in zbrush, it ereases a manner in which even the depth is cleared, leaving a black portion before the canvas. :b4: :b4: :b4: :b4: :b4: :b4:

The same thing is happening in my photoshop, something which I havent witnessed in my whole career using photoshop.

Has the zbrush export options carried the zbrush magic into my photoshop with the psd file ?

ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM ?

Aurick when ever you come tonight do let me know about this one

The thing to remember about ZBrush is that when you fill the canvas you are creating a layer of pixols at a specific depth.

When you then use the Eraser tool to remove those pixols you’re not actually removing them. What you’re doing is tunneling back into the canvas until you reach a depth that’s behind the clippling plane. The Eraser brush simply makes this easy because it automatically tunnels back to that depth in one shot.

As with all brushes, though, the Alpha plays a role. The default alpha has soft edges. This means that the tunneling effect itself will also have soft edges. Those are the darkened areas that you see – places where the depth is visible. If you select Brush 14 and set the focal shift to -100 you will have almost none of this effect.

Aurick but I am having this issue in photoshop ?

I mean how will I mask a layer in photoshop on another layer.

In zbrush the concept is like that- accepted, but it shouldnt be happening in photoshop ?

Or should I remove the alpha channel of that file ? I ahvent checked it though ?

Aurick i checked theres no alpha channel in the psd file.

How can this happen in photoshop ?

( sorry wrong post) :o

Then I don’t understand what you’re doing. Could you please describe your exact steps?

Ok I created the illustrated pic in zbrush -many layers -baked them, didint merged them as I need to add or remove individual characters/elements if required.

Exported it as psd file.

Now I had two psds - one only background of terrain other background with the characters.

I was trying to blend character pic with background pic below it in photoshop - either by using eraser brush ( erasing the top pic) or masking .

But I was shocked to see above result.

meaning i see this in zbrush not in photoshop ??? How come ?

Ok I am trying the same thing with same pics again - Now I did saved them again in photoshop so i dont have one of the originals psd from zbrush - its overwritten.

Now this effect is not happening.

Aurick - I dont drink, smoke or I aint a drug addict - I mean I saw this happening, because when I used erease brush in photoshop I had this result, then I tried layer masking and same thing happened and I saved it as webjpeg image for this post.

First why it happened then why its not happening anymore ?

Only you can answer this question

I think there are a couple of clues in your posted pic. The inner area has sharp jaggies around the edge, but the dark ‘halo’ has very blurred edges which are semi-transparent at the outer borders. Also, the ‘grass’ texture is much finer on the inner portion, compared with the grass in the bulk of the picture. Depending on whether the inner portion is the top-most layer, or the background, I’d suggest you look at the following:
:white_small_square: have you been using drop shadow?
:white_small_square: was the layer merge setting ‘normal’, or something like ‘multiply’?
:white_small_square: selecting a solid eraser brush, are you able to scrub out the dark halo (assuming it’s on the top layer)?
:white_small_square: How can you account for the different quality of the grass? I doubt it’s significant, but are the two layers at different resolution layers/formats?

If you’ve got some web space, you could always upload a two layered psd file for us to play with.

Mocchie i forgot to mention one thing - the reason why I was blending two layers at the first place.

The layer below with the finer grass was the frame of my comics I created a month back.

Now when I was adding characters , I forgot to bake the previous layer - of the grass. Now my characters are toon shaded, I loaded the new material in same slot, resulting in change of material of grass and without realizing I pressed the ctrl + s buttons.

So Now I had two psd files, one made one month ago having fine grass and other new one with this thick grass

I was liking that fine grass thats the reason I was trying to blend two layers to have that fine grass.

But I faced this problem so I decided to go on with the thick grass and resaved that file in photoshop.

So I dont have the original psd file exported from zbrush though I have to check that i saved the old zbrush file with differnt name or not.

If not then one of the oriiginal psd from zbrush will be missing - meaning the same effect wont happen as one pic wont be there

let me see if I can find old zbrush file.

regarding the erasing issue- that time for a sec I felt i was erasing in zbrush.:wink: and not in photoshop - it was as smooth as we do in zbrush.

No i dont have the original old zbrush file, or eevn its psd now.

I just have a jpeg image of old file which I saved previous month. Heres the comparison - Toonshaded material even amde the stones brighter :o
