ZBrush keeps crashing in the same spot

Actually it crashes more than any app I have ever seen, but right now I am focused on one spot.

I get a tool, make geometry, give it a few hundred thousand, delete lower.
2. Get an alpha, make stencil, place it.
3. Turn on planar UV, pick size
4. Use polypaint to paint black with the stencil.
5. Creat new texture by Polypaint button.
6. Go to Mask> mask by intensity and right there it keeps crashing.

I am doing tha bove experiment with very basic geometry, like a cube, and a very simple stencil, like a square…

Why is that? Am I doing something in a bad way? I am just trying to make shapes to extract into subtools…and it’s just frustrating. I have these kinds of problems over and over with zbrush on two different machines, both powerful, one dual core, another quadcore, both with 4 GB RAM, one on XP the other on Vista. It’s frustrating because I can imagine the potential of ZBrush, if only it was stable.

I find this interesting. In Zbrush 3, all I have to do is paint through the stencil, immediately press mask by intensity, and then extract in the subtools. Presto! But in ZBrush 3.5, I have to take about 2 more steps, going through and setting the UV, picking polypaint, make texture, THEN going to mask by intensity. Why are there more steps now than in a previous version? It is less efficient now.

using planerUV might not be the best choice depending on your geometry.
as to your second post, it may be less efficient to you, but only for making a stencil. many of the new options regarding uv’s, textures etc are things people have wanted for a while. although why we can’t just mask through a stencil is somewhat mindboggling.
okay just for you i made a macro.
just hit this button right after you do the polypainting through the stencil, you don’t even have to turn off the stencil. it will set up a PUV map of 2048 and do all the transfer. open in a text editor to see its functions if you want.
put this in your zstartup/macros/misc folder.
