ZBrush is Killing Me

Every time I try to use this program, I end up wanting to scream. I’ve watched all the tutorial videos and read numerous threads but I still can’t do the simplest of things using this program. I’ve never encountered one that was so difficult to learn. It’s as if the program is mocking me. I need some help.

My task is very simple: I have created a simple stony boulder (552 polys) in ZBrush 3.1 and want to give it a realistic-looking texture. Here it is in ZBrush:

What happened?! It was looking so promising for a minute there. What did I do wrong?

Please help me, this is driving me crazy. TT__TT

You’re on the right track. You just need to understand what polypaint actually is. Polypaint is an advancement of vertex painting. The color is stored with the model’s points rather than with a texture map. This means that your model needs to have about the same number of points as your texture.

How big is your texture? Multiply the length by the width to get the number of pixels in it. Now divide the model to have that many points or higher.

This time when you use Txr>Col you’ll get something that looks right. Paint it to refine it how you want, then convert it back to texture. (You’ll need to first assign a texture to the model that’s the same size as the original, otherwise ZBrush will use the default size of 1024.)

The resulting texture will wrap onto your low poly model to look the way you want.

By the way, why haven’t you upgraded to 3.5?
