ZBrush general configuration - Answered

Hey,

I am struggling with setting up Zbrush here at our company, because the usual mechanisms to customize an application seem to be missing. Are there no environment variables? I am especially looking for a way to tell Zbrush where to put its cache (moving it from C: to a RAID) and where to put plugins or scripts? Do I have to install all of the plugins locally?!

Cheers

Sebastian

1) You can’t. For performance reasons, ZBrush uses its own virtual memory which is always in the ZBrush 4R2\vmem folder. If you want ZBrush to capitalize on your RAID, install ZBrush there. ZBrush itself has a very small footprint. As for any data, that you can create, you can put that elsewhere. If you’re doing that, my recommendation would be to place shortcuts in each of the Z folders (like ZBrush 4R2\ZMaterials) that point to where you have created your equivalent folder. These shortcuts will then show up in LightBox’s tabs or in any of the Load/Save windows that you launch.

  1. All plugins that Pixologic has released for version 4R2 are included and installed automatically (unless you said not to by a custom installation). Any additional plugins you wish to install go in the ZStartup\Zplugs folder. In fact, anything you want to load every time you launch ZBrush goes in its ZStartup subfolder category such as ZStartup\Materials. A maximum of 25 of each item type (except plugins) should be installed. Any additional items should go in the Z folders or your data folders.

Ok. thanks for the heads up.

By the way, there are some plugins that have been updated since 4R2 launched. They’re all found in http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/zplugins/

If a release date is shown for a plugin and that date is later than the date you got ZBrush 4R2, you should download and install the most current version. In all cases, it will install to the Zstartup\Zplugs folder.
