Zbrush freezing when pressing space bar

Hi,

I have a problem with Zbrush crashing from time to time, and I’m not sure if it’s something that only happens to me or if that’s something common that can be solved someway.

It usually happens when I press space bar to change the brush size, sometimes, just after the popup menu appears zbrush freezes and stops working. When it does that, the only way to get out of it is pressing ctrl + alt + del and to close it from there, losing the work that wasn’t saved before the crash.

Anybody else had that problem or knows how to avoid it?

I’m not familiar with that happening with the spacebar. It’s a known issue with right-click, though.

Are you going really fast; not really giving the commands time to register?

Have you made any modifications to your ZData folders? Have you tried disabling plugins to see if maybe there’s a conflict there? (You do this by double-clicking to launch ZBrush, then holding Shift until the startup screen finishes loading.)

I don’t think I’m going that fast, to make zbrush crash. I have a few plugins but they are all very known (traspose master, multi append and so), but if that’s a known issue with right-click that may be the problem.

I have a weird way of holding pens (all pens, not just tablet ones), and it’s possible I’m accidentally clicking the lower pen button (wich is bound to right click) when pressing the space bar and trying to change the size of the brush fast. And it probably only happens while holding the space bar, because when I’m sculpting I do slower strokes, making it harder to accidentally press the button.

I will try bounding that button to anything else and I will see if it works.

This same thing happens to me, and I think it’s a computer performance issue.

Sometimes when I go for Alt I’ll hit space. And since I’m hitting Alt I’m probably click-dragging to move the scene or rotate, which causes a crash (actually, a freeze like you said, which is basically like a crash). Then Ctrl Alt Del to end ZB.

My ZB only comes up in the processes tab, and never the applications tab, same with you? Just wondering…

And now that you mentioned it, when my pen clicks were bound to right click it happened much more frequently than when I changed it to [ and ] for resizing.

So try to bind it to something else, and I’m not sure if it’s good news or bad news, but it happens to at least one other ZB’er out there.

Hey aurick, I just re-read your post about changing zdata folders. I posted a couple days ago about changing default brushes, and then changed some settings in ZData (and had changed some things long ago). What kind of troubles can this cause? How can I go back to default ZData folder, and if I do that, how can I make ZB autoload my custom brushes and materials (ie, what folder do I dump the files in to autoload)? Thanks.

It’s exactly the same issue you are describing, gboess.

I tried changing the pen button to something else, and yes, it seems to happen less often but it still happens. ZB appears only on the processes tab for me too. I’m using windows xp 64, not sure if that can be the problem.

My computer is arround 2 years old, but it was a very good rig when I bought it so it should be able to run ZB with no problems from this side.
