zbrush displacement in maya vray 1.5

does someone know how to setup zbrush 32bit displacement map to work in maya vray 1.5?
i have problem to make it work… i use same texture in mray… put AlphaGain to 2.2 and alpha offset to -1.1 and it work perfectly in mray…
but this setup dont work in vray…

there is not enough subdivisions because vray dont take mrayAproximation settings… and displacement is lack of details and strength…

maybe this is more like post for vray forum… but maybe someone know how to solve this problem!

thanx!

I’m having the same problem.

Actually, my zbrush3.5 exports alpha gain at 0.946 for mentalray (and half negative for alpha offset), but it works correct (I suppose it’s not 32bit DisplMap, though I cecked the option in Zbrush before exporting). However it works well on mentalray, not working at 2.2 / -1.1.

So I achieved good render with mentalray. Now I prove same scene in V-ray but I cannot achieve the result. At same values it’s like washed out and no values seem to work fine. I can’t upload pics cause client and product confidentiality. I’ll try other renders and post it.

Is there any GOOD tutorial about rendering displacement from zbrush in maya with vray???

Anyone had the same problem and solved it?
Thxs in advanced.

(Sorry for my english, I know only the enough to survive, trying my best)

seems that nobody uses vray + maya + zbrush displacement

In ZBrush:-
How are you creating your displacement map?
Do you use ‘Adaptive’?
Have you tried a 16bit map & what file format i.e tif,jpg,psd?
Do you alter the ‘mid range’ on your displacement settings before creating?

Photoshop:-
Important Note:-
Do you manipulate your displacement maps in Photoshop with colour correction enabled?

In Maya:-
What version of Maya are you using?
Do you use the approximation editor, if so, what settings?
Have you halved the alpha gain on the displacement map?
Do you turn off the automatic ‘Displacement’ settings for your model?

These are all important pieces of information you need to know, so you can then proceed with Vray and so others can help, Otherwise people will be very reluctant to help you at all.

Hi!!

Finally I decided to do it in V-Ray, just because i’m more familiared with.

However I will pick up the file again and try making changes in some settings as you propossed. Thanks.

My settings were:

Adaptative ON, tif file (i’ll try .psd, and .map, probably will work better) and i didn’t altered the midrange in displacement map at zbrush. probably that solves the problem of the 2.2 -1.1 settings i can’t get.

did’nt altered nothing at photoshop.

I worked in maya 2010. Now trying 2011, it’s ok and works fine with v-ray 1.5, so I download the trial. By the time i posted this thread i was using Maya2010.

I use approximation editor. Actually i achieved some better results just activating FEATURE DISPLACEMENT from maya and only using SUBDIVS APROXIMATION for mentalray, instead of using subdivs and displac.Aprox. Don’t kknow why, better results with maya built-in displacement with mentalray subdivs aproximmation. Settings were Spatial, and 4 iterations (same as smooth levels i worked with at zbrush). Now I bought a better machine (older was asking for retirement) and can achieve more subdivs level at zbrush and iterations or subdivs (don’t remember the setting name) at 5 or 6.

Resuming, I’ll try some of this changes and I bet it will be a noticeable improvement. I’ll feedback in some days.
Thanks Very much.

hi Gothic Grin:

The main qestion (as far as I can see) is what alpha settings to use with displacement maps rendered in maya using vray.

as far as i know it doesn´t make any difference if you use 16 or 32 bit displacement, concerning alpha gain and alpha offset.

also it doesn´t make any difference for the alpha values if it´s created with or without “adaptive”.

if you created the displacement maps with the correct settings - why should you edit them in photoshop?

the file format doesn´t change any of the vray render settings (except it might not be readable - 32 bit requires exr; maya will tell you that it can´t read the texture but still will render it).

the maya version also won´t change anything about the alpha settings.

and, yeah, obviously nfok has halved the alpha settings (as he writes)

correct approximation editor settings and “feature displacement” checkbox OFF might be an issue.

btw.: i used alpha gain 1.0 and alpha offset -0.5 - (bigguns recommended these settings) - but my 32- and my 16bit displacements are still a little bit off.

When I asked the questions, imparticular the one about manipulation in Photoshop, I wasn’t saying you ‘should’ do this, I was merely asking, as I didn’t want to jump to conclusions, I don’t know how far your knowledge goes with these programs.

Here are some settings that I have been told work:-

Displacement Map Material:-
Attribute Editor-
Colour Balance-
Alpha Gain 0.010
Alpha Offset -0.010

Approximation Editor:-
Displacement Teselation

Approx Method - Spatial
Approx Style - Fine
Min Subdiv - 2 (you may need more or less, test it)
Max Subdiv - 5 (you may need more or less, test it)
Length - 0.010

and a ‘Tick’ on View Dependent

Subdivisions(Polygon and subd. surfaces)

Approx method - Parametric
N Subdivisions - 4

These settings work in Mental Ray & Vray, with out any problems.

It also helps to use a TANGENT NORMAL map with the displacement map.

I have heard people mention that Maya doesn’t like 32bit maps and certain file formats also tend to work better than others.

On this very forum someone also mentions that only ‘Adaptive’ displacements work.

I believe you could also use object space normal maps with displacement maps. or just a bump map.

maya doesn´t like 32 bit maps? that´s nonsense. just turn “RGB” in the “create displacement map” section in zbrush ON and convert the tif to a map (for mental ray, using imf_copy command) or to an exr (for vray, convert in photoshop).

adaptive: “Adaptive Scan Mode generates a map that is more accurate in detailed areas.” (zbrush help)
It´s just a way of improving the quality of the displacement map

Sometimes it´s useful to read help files instead of posting “what you heard people mention”.

btw: alpha gain 0,01 and alpha offset -0,01 is just bullsh…

You ask for help, someone spends their time to help and you develop a bitch mentality, why?

I know what works, I have seen it work and wanted to pass it on to people who asked for help.
You obviously don’t deserve or appreciate help, you are extremely arrogant.

Hey Ohlda, GothicGrin is right. If you ask for some advice, doesn’t matter if it works you or not, as long as someone has wasted its time to answer you, without ANY benefit for him/her. So, if the settings don’t work with your scenes, try your own, or go on searching for help.
As far as I know, no one has the BIG TRUTH, so your settings may be different than their, and both be correct.

Really, relax, take it easy, and try try try. Otherwise people won’t help you at all. isn’t it nicer when we help one another than being arrogant with every help you get? Team thinking, group help, that’s forums about… don’t be so ‘misrespectful’ (does this word exist?? don’t think so)

by the way i’m on hollyday so i can’t say nothing new yet, but i bet GothicGrin answers were correct, at least helpful. I’ll say in some days.
