ZBrush digital action figure / maquette

Here is a little bit of fun.

Here is an articulated action figure that began life in ZBrush . This guy will eventually get any number of heads depending on the character the body is used for which is why his face is unfinished here. The idea was to have a symmetrical base sculpture which would be cut apart and articulated in clay/wax.

The ZTool was output molded and cast in wax to be disassembled and all the joints scupted in.

Here is Gentle Giant DigiSculptor Mark DeDecker hanging out with “tiny” the muscleman behind the shop.

We are easily amused…

Hi Scott,

Really nice sculpt, be interesting to see what Gentle Giant do with it.

It seems strange they didn’t just scan a body builder and print that out though.

Hmm, . . one of these days studios might not need modelers at all - they’ll just stock pose from a library of rigged base models - morph a suitable head/expression, and print it out to whatever size required.

Fantastic !

That’ll save us a bit of work.

Oh, . . er, . . hang on though, . .

That looks like a fun project all right Scott  Nice going on the further sculpt, too :+1:

What are you SAYING SS810 :grimacing: :grimacing:

Cool!

Please keep us updated. I’d love to see how the final figure turns out with joints and all.

Scott you are my hero! Thank you so much for starting the Z Brush movement at SCAD.

That’s an awesome pose. At what subdivision level (poly count) did you work with him in Maya? I’ve had a hard time in the past going from Z Brush to Maya and back to Zbrush. Again great work.

Awesome sculpting!

Maybe for humans that might work, but there will always be the need fo rsomeone to go in after the “scan” to tidy up, adjust proportions and add sculpting effects for various humaniod creatures. They will never replace modelers.

Hey Scott.
Dude! That’s looking friggin sweet.
Way to step up man.
BTW, I was talking about you today… John Brown.
You’re going to learn alot.
Hope all is well.
Cheers

hey scott!

looks really good. can’t wait to see the action figures.
the only crit i got would be, i think his hips could use a bit more work. think they need to be a bit broader.

…travels! :+1:
The very early Wip was a cool finished work :sunglasses:

Nice…! looking very awesome… :+1: :+1:

Nice work Scott.

It’s all I can do not put reams of text down that folds you sculpt, the name ‘tiny’ and possible reference material into a terrible, terrible bit of imagery.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the kind words and interest.

voodoomonkey: Thanks Voodoo!! I am going to try my best to get into Johns class… On top of work and my own classes it will be heavy but I learned so much from his DVDs and the guy knows his stuff. I gotta get in there.

SolidSnakexxx: thanks man!

jason: I can only imagine what you have in mind : P

Frenchy Pilou: Thanks! I plan on bringing some more character into him and I also feel like I need to address transitions where I changed his pose. Some things feel too general to me right now. I dont know where he is going though but I will see : )

abyss103: Yeah i see that too. The spacing between the great trocanters is off compared to the shoulders.

KrakenCMT and SS810: Fear not! Scanning will not replace ZBrush any more than ZBrush has replaced sculptors! Each step informs the others and removing one just makes for a less versatile toolbox not a more efficient process. The end result is always driven by the artists involved.

j lizzle: thanks! How are things back in Savannah? Good to see there are some other SCAD folks on here.

Atwooki: Thanks man, I love your Professor bust btw.

Ricardo: It is spelled “MAAHHH!!!”

I will try and get some better shots of the figure itself up as they are available.

Cheers!

cool stuff Scott! I wonder tho what kind of “action” he’s gonna get in his ummm current condition?

Here is the articulated figure. Have you ever seen Piccard so active?

Articulations in wax by Will Harbottle at GGS.

Very cool works, image, rendering :+1:
Ps :Sorry who is Piccard? I don’t go to movie or TV so…
using Google founded that “Jean Luc Piccard” Star Treck’s Captain ?
Seems that is him ! Cool resemblance :sunglasses:

whos that old pooch in the first photo…??

nice work scott

Great articulation! I love super-articulated toys like the Micromen from Japan. That would make a really nice base model to sell as an art model/custom figure base. Very impressive likeness in the face too.

Thanks for the update!

Scott,
I really hand it to you on your character/anatomy study. Giving you five stars.
There are some exceptional subtleties in its anatomy
The Picard figure is great as well.
Fabulous work Scott!

I’m not sure of how much of your original model was used, but the finished doll looks great !
The likeness is superbly sculpted !
Are they going to articulate the fingers (like the super posable Spiderman ) ?
Looking forward to buying one
