ZBrush Detailing Stage - Confused

Hello,

I am completely new to ZBrush and currently still learning. So the problem is, I am currently trying to give some details on this model’s mouth. As you can see, the topology is still a mess, and it is quite low-resolution. I am trying to divide the geometry, but it is already ~12 millions, which means it is can’t be divided anymore. When I am giving some sculpt using ClayTubes Brush, it becomes even more messy and when I am smoothing it out, it destroys the shape.

I hope someone can help me with this problem. Any suggestions, advice, answers will be really appreciated. For notes, I am building the face from ZSphere then turn it into Adaptive Skin.

Thanks for your attention

The problem is that your topology doesn’t suit the details you’re trying to sculpt. You’re essentially having to cut diagonally across polygons, which forces more subdivisions. But the rest of the model doesn’t need all those subdivisions, so you’re in a situation of wasting a bunch of resources dividing where it’s not necessary in order to get more geometry where you do need it.

In essence, you’re trying to detail before you’ve refined the overall form. That’s a mistake.

The simple solution is to fix your edge flow. And that is very easily done using ZRemesher. You’ll be able to drastically reduce the polygon count of your model as a whole and will end up with loops in places that will allow you to refine the shapes in a way that looks good.
