Zbrush crashes consistently whenever I try to use spotlight.

Any time I load a texture into spotlight and then hit “z” to paint, Zbrush crashes. Every time. So I’m pretty much screwed over here at work.

I’m on Mac OS v 10.8.5

Please send help!

What hardware (RAM, etc.) are you running?

What file size and types are the texture files you’re bringing in?

Also are you using the latest version of Zbrush 4R6 P2?

I’m on a MAC Pro early 2009 2 x 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

I’ve got 12 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC in the Memory department

and I’m using Zbrush 4r6 p2

I tried to reply before, I don’t know why It’s getting blocked. I’m using Zbrush 4r6 p2

Mac early 2009 2 x 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

Memory 12 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC

You didn’t answer question #2.

It’s just the standard textures that come with Zbrush. Doesn’t matter what size I use. It just crashes.

Hmmm. Has it ever worked for you? There’s ZAppLink to your paint program. I know that doesn’t fix your issue. Maybe your install is corrupted. Maybe the memory has issues.

Just uninstalled all versions of ZBrush and reinstalled from the standalone download. Diagnostic check on memory says everything appears to be OK. Problem remains.

And yes, it used to work fine. I hadn’t used it for about 3 months, and in that time, the only thing I can think of is that I updated to 10.8.5. After that, it just keeps crashing. I updated from 4r5 to 4r6, but it still doesn’t work.

I can’t for the life of me work out why this is happening. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled everything. It still keeps crashing without fail. Tech support stopped responding after a while. I thought I’d wait until the next release, but I’ve got a project coming up that’s going to heavily rely on zbrush, wiping my whole system isn’t really an option for me.

Can you roll back your OS?

I’ve considered rolling back the OS, but it wouldn’t be feasible as I’d have one computer not running on the same OS as everyone else in the building. What’s strange is, it seems to apply only to this computer as I’ve installed a copy of zbrush on the other machines in the office, and I do not receive this error.

What I have not been able to figure out is what exactly is causing the error on this particular computer.

Still the same error? That info has to mean something to those in the know.

This is all I know.

Crashes every time I exit out of spotlight. I’m running a Mac OS 10.7.5 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 16 GB ram.
Any solution to this problem?

Zbrush support tried a number of things with me before they gave out. Didn’t work for me, but maybe you’ll have some luck.

Let’s try changing the shortcut from Z to something else.

  1. Load a texture into Spotlight.
  2. The Edit Spotlight button can be found In the Transform Palette.
  3. Hold down CTRL+ALT, then click on the Edit Spotlight button.
  4. Assign a new shortcut by clicking any letter or number. For example, 7.
  5. Now click that shortcut and see if you can work.

If that works you can save this as your shortcut by going to the Preferences>Hotkeys>Store. Try changing it back to Z and see if that also works.

Try this one too:
Download and install this application, http://www.atpurpose.com/atMonitor/

  1. Launch ZBrush
  2. In the atMonitor application click on ZBrush.
  3. At the top you will see renice, click it
  4. Change the Priority to 2 and set that. (If you wanted to keep this setting then you would do the Set and Remember) (I would also try a couple different options here.)
  5. Now go into ZBrush and the stroke issue should be gone.

Once a texture is loaded into spotlight and the texture is sized to fit the model I “tap” the “z” key to hide the widget… ZBrush crashes!

I have tried to initialize ZBrush. I have completely un-installed ZBrush and installed a “clean” version of 4R6 P2.

I should clarify that I’m running a high-end PC with 32 gigs of RAM. The process WAS working last week on this very same machine…

I’m confused. Please help, my project is at a stand still.

Here is a recorded video of the issue.

SOLVED!

Thought I would post this in case others were having same problem. I am assuming the issue was in the custom UI I set up b/c it’s the only thing I changed since last week when it was working.

So >>>

I re-installed ZBrush 4R6 P2 from clean install - deleted ALL Pixologic files and folder I could find.

Under Preferences tab I selected “Restore Standard UI”

Seems to work fine now!

Cheers

This did not work for me…

thanks tho.

Shot in the dark from here, go into settings shown and test it to see what your results are. Might help. Could it be a permissions issue? Not good either way. http://docs.pixologic.com/reference-guide/preferences/performance/

Thanks Doug.

Spotlight issue solved… see above.
