ZBrush Crash - Memory (RAM) Issues

Hi,

I want merge 3 subtools (everyone has 18 million polys) to 1 subtool, but everytime the program crashes. I increased the memory (4096mb) under preferencers -> Mem, but the problem still exist. Sometimes i get an error message about my insufficient RAM but i have 32GB RAM and ZBrush use just 7GB of it.

  1. Why i can only change the max compact memory under preferences to (4096mb). If the error message say the RAM is the problem, does it mean the mainboard RAM or the graphic card RAM?

  2. I think the compact memory settings means the graphic RAM because it’s 4096mb, but if i increase the max Level to 4GB, ZBrush just still use 2GB of my graphic ram.

Do anyone know what the problem is? Do i use the wrong settings? Is my RAM (32GB) or my graphic RAM (4G) to low for the 18 million poly tools?

best regards

Zbrush is almost entirely CPU driven. Your GPU Ram will never be much of a factor. “Compact Ram” threshold refers to virtual Memory (HDD).

The Max poly per mesh slider governs the maximum polygons you can have in a single subtool. If trying to merge 3 x 18mil tools into a single subtool, the resulting subtool could very well be exceeding the default limit.

You could try increasing this limit, but I think the most likely problem is that youre asking too much of your particular system or ZB. 18 million polys is a fairly dense subtool, and while ZB can sculpt on it, the higher you go in polycount for a single subtool, the greater the chance of program instability. 3 x 18 million poly subtools involved in a single operation is probably just too much.

Reduce polygon count for subtools involved (re-mesh+ projection to reclaim detail). Try merging only two at a time, re-mesh, and then add the third. Adopt better polycount discipline to avoid stability problems–better to have 100 million polygons distributed over a dozen subtools, than it is to have a single subtool with 20+ million polygons.

You might like to upgrade to the latest version of ZBrush which is ZBrush 2019. Upgrading is free for registered users. ZBrush 4R6 is now several years old and is no longer officially supported.

Heh, I didn’t even notice the version.
