Zbrush crash: "insufficient memory"

I’m having an annoying problem with zbrush lately…

I’ve been working on a new model in zbrush 3.5, and every time I wanna create and export a displacement map from the lowest subdiv of the main subtool the program crashes and says I don’t have enough memory. This doesnt seem very likely though, since this is a 2 month old comp with 4gb ram and a quadcore cpu.

I also recreated two lower subdivs and tried to create a displacement from those, but still without result.

Any ideas?

what’s the size of the displacement map you want to create? more than 4096X4096 ?

you might try to quit every other open app , launch Zbrush afresh and right away try to do render the displacement map as the very first thing.

oh and 5 g of ram in a 32bit system ( I assume?) doesn’t mean all that much.
could well be that there are not even 2 gigabyte left for Zbrush.

The UV map size is 4096x4096… I’m assuming thats also the displacement map size?

Yeah I’ve tried closing everything else, but didnt seem to help.
I’ve got 4GB DDR ram on a 64bit version of Windows 7. Isn’t that enough to run zbrush?

Is there a way to allocate more memory to zbrush then?

did you also close Zbrush, start it and do the displacement as the very first thing?

whats your mem setting in preferences?

At first it was default; 256mb. But I’ve tried increasing to 2000mb and even 4000mb… same result.
I’ve also lowered the UV map size to 2048x2048… same thing.

Could this be a windows 7 issue?

ok, this sounds unusual. I’m out if ideas. don’t think it is a windows 7 issue. running w7 64 bit myself and zbrush flies.

Thanks for the effort though!

you could try try to turn of adaptive, had the same prob with normalmaps and this fixed it.

Cheers

Oh great, that did it. Cheers!

What exactly does the Adaptive setting do?

Great it worked for you too! Im also wondering what adaptive is exactly doing… i guess its maybe further subdividing the mesh, and causing this crash because the mesh is already heavily subdivided (there was a setting in the ancient zmapper that does something like that). Anyway i see no difference between my maps created with adaptive and without.

Cheers!
