Zbrush Crash - Happens every time!

I’ve been experiencing an odd crash since I upgraded to 3.1 and it seems to be replicable and happen every single time I attempt this.

I load up Zbrush, select polysphere as my default. Then on the tools palette there is an object named “Sphere3D” by default for me. If there isn’t I create one by going to the subtool feature and selecting append, select it, and then choose make PolyMesh3D off the tools pallette.

Perhaps to understand why I use this sphere that is only 8192 polys instead of a higher res one, I need to explain that I use Zbrush to create content for a platform called Secondlife.com. The converter has better results when working with this polysphere over the higher resolution model due to the compression.

Anyway, back to the problem. So I am working with my new Sphere3D that has been turned into “PolyMesh3D”. Here are the steps I take to reproduce the issue I am having.

  1. From the startup either hit escape, or select the polysphere.
  2. Go to subtool, select Append, and add a Sphere3D to the project.
  3. Select the Sphere3D as the active object from the subtool menu, then choose Make PolyMesh3D from the tool palette.
  4. Go back to the original tool via the tool palette, and repeate step 3.
  5. Now select one of the PM3D_Sphere3D tools from the tool palette, and go to the subtool menu.
  6. Select append, and choose PM3D_Sphere from the top row of available objects.
  7. Repeat step 6 so you now have 3 objects in the scene.
  8. Select the third added PM3D_Sphere from the subtool menu, and go to the Deformation menu.
  9. In Deformation, go to Offset, and turn off all axis except for Z.
  10. Attempt to move the object via the offset tool by any number greater than 0. IE 1+

The error that occurs is the following.

I’m not sure why it does this, but it was quite frustrating to spend several hours creating a project, only to have all of the work lost when it crashed on me.

This is a known issue. The solution is to rotate the new subtool in the view port before attempting any deformations. So, to amend your step thru:

  1. Select the third added PM3D_Sphere from the subtool menu.
    9. Click+drag in the view port outside the mesh to rotate it.
  2. Go to the Deformation menu.
  3. In Deformation, go to Offset, and turn off all axis except for Z.
  4. Move the object via the offset tool by any number greater than 0.

HTH,

Well that was a relatively simple work around! Thank you! That saves me a lot of headache!
