zbrush comic

I read a lot of comics since childhood (mostly european) by far one of the best use of 3d medium to depict a story in a comic book I have seen ! I am glad you chose not to let the cold 3d that overpowers the image, instead keeping a more rather ‘traditional’ feel. A mistake I feel lots of authors do nowaday imo…

If the comic is one day released in Belgium, I’ll make sure to support you ; )
Courage le voisin du Sud

Excellent work. I love how badass the look is. It really has a unique style. Can’t wait to see how you do the environments and fx! Any previews?

Luxo you’re doing fantastic job. Tell me… are you using only zb fro modeling? Or you’re using some other 3d package to crate some shapes?

@waiyeh_L: merci mais je suis de plus pret que tu peux le penser je viens du luxembourg;).

@jyandel: not yet I m working on the establishing shot it will be a mix 2d 3d

@lukx: I do use classic 3d package for the base mesh.

That’s very true ! Comics are a sort of wedding between text and drawing. The most important thing is text, because story drives it all, and good dialogues make it even better. graphics are important as well, but they actually are the surface of the medium: despite at the first look seems to be the opposite, comics are not illustration. drawings or graphics always tell a story.

great work, I like this equipment about the clothes

brilliant!

duuude! this is fckng AWESOME!
how u did that comic effect?
i need do one comic book to college, but i haven’t idea how to do with 3d…
and u, u are my hero! hahahahaha

This is such a cool style!

I love that!!!

Hello Luxo, my name is Saul D Orihuela. Just to let you you know, I have not posted anything here at ZBrushCentral in years. However, your page really caught my attention. Why? well, I’m a ‘former’ professional comic book colorist (you can see some of my old work at: www.wickedwheelz.com). I sadly attempted to do the same thing your doing today about 10 years ago. However I was using Poser then (see the following links: http://www.angelfire.com/art/dragonO/WOLVERINE.html
http://www.angelfire.com/art/dragonO/PARA45.html
http://www.angelfire.com/art/dragonO/PARA67.html
http://www.angelfire.com/art/dragonO/PARA89.html
http://www.angelfire.com/art/dragonO/PARA1011.html). I too at that time was trying to find a ‘quick’ way to do 3D but not have that 3D look and, to be able to meet the monthly deadlines. Well, it was just too time consuming doing it that way.
I then tried ZBrush later (http://www.angelfire.com/art/dragonO/3DPARAHEADS.html
http://www.angelfire.com/art/dragonO/PARACOMBO.html), and shortly afterward, was hired by HiFi design and just colored comics the way they are colored today, all in photoshop. No, I am not trying to undermind your efforts, on the contrary, I applaud your efforts. Hell man, you may just be the first lad to once and for all get this 3D/2D thing right for once. Your pipline and style AS FAR AS I AM concered are the FIRST for comics to be produced this way and still be able to meet the monthly deadline. Cause we both know, once you build your characters and props the first time, after that IT IS a cake walk. Keep at it Luxo, your on the right path. And let me tell you, you need to present this to Marvel or TopCow right away (that is, once you feel very secure with what your doing)… I promise, they will hire you in a heart beat. You may just be the next “Liquid”… or the next big step for comics. And if don’t mind, I am also going to forward this page to my old boss at HiFi design, this may catch his attention. Best of luck my friend, best of luck.

… and if one of the major publishers don’t hire you… there nut’s!

@Dragon: thanx man you ve written very interesting stuff.

I didn 't realise people were so much concerned about the deadlines.
For my first 20 pages comic 90% of the 3d is done. So this will not be an issue. Now I m taking my time to do everything right in terms of storytelling and comic page display. I m not taking this lightly.
Good luck to you.

Hello again Luxo. Listen, you can contact Brian Miller directly at:

BrianMiller@hifidesign.com

You can then ask him about time frames so you can get a realistic feel for real life production and anything else you may have in mind. By the way, he does have a book out (at amazon) about the coloring business called: HiFi Color for Comics.

thanx man vers generous of you

Very nice pipeline. Your technique manages to preserve the silhouette and gesture of your models very well.

Thanks for posting your materials, however when I tried using your Ink02.ZMT, this is what I got… any thoughts? Anyone on here know what I’m doing wrong (probably obvious).

Also, for the base pass and the highlights pass are there specific materials that you are using?

Once again thanks for posting!ink_shader_test_001.jpg

Yes I use Ink02.ZMT then in ps I get rid of the red.
I combine it with toon_jasonh.zmt which I render.

Credits to the guys who did the shaders.
I found them here

Hmmm okay going through here and there is just text man … where the new panels dude ! :+1:

This is a very inspiring piece of work. Though I am still not ready to use Zbrush or any other 3d medium (I want to at least get some basics in traditional drawing first) I will definitely want to try something like this. I hope that by the time I am ready to pick up Zbrush you will have takin this project even further and will have a detailed workflow to show us

Personally though I will be going for a more anime/manga styled comic :3

Very cool idea
