Zbrush Centaur

Hi guys!,

Just started using Zbrush and I’m lovin it!! I created the base model in maya then brought it into zbrush to do all the major modeling and details. He is still in progress so any crits are more than welcome! The first image is taken from zbrush, the second and third are displacements in maya.

Looks good … There is something odd in the shoulder setup but I am not sure what. maybe it goes up too far? The armpit I mean. The horse front could use a few details still. It just loosk a bit too smooth and round.

Ever read Phillip Jose Farmer books? His description of centaurs easily solve the problem I’ve always had with visual adaptations. It’s body mass and functionality, perhaps I’m being fussy - just trying to help. Specifically, with all that weight forward, those legs are going to break - easily. Not to mention the issue of lungs and hearts, perhaps it really deosn’t matter if you are reproducing the classic centaur.

Great books, great sci-fi and descriptions of fantastic creatures.

You may now go back to the regularly scheduled programming…

GhostofMacbeth: I agree with the shoulder and the front of his horse chest, I will go in a start adding detail. I am going to have to work on the shoulder a bit more. I used reference from 3d.sk, I will try to look at it from different angles. Thanks

Jason Belec: Haha I had thought about how his weight would be supported, there is no such thing as being to fussy! Its how details are made  . I will look into Phillip Farmer, thank you for the recommendation!

chrisgrim, I really roughed up a concept in Zbrush, based on the Farmer description, which has a bellows upfront containing lungs and heart, technically the nose and mouth would have to allow for this as well, say Mick Jagger or Stevn Tyler.

I increased the horse mass and reduced your man mass.

Another approach would be the giraffe physique if you wanted legs a little more spindley. Giraffe have more dog build, massive front, lower but less powerful rear (akin to many dog breeds) and in the front are massive lungs and heart to get blood to the upper extremity. In fact this would be closer to what you want even though the body is shorter than the neck. The upper body does require a lot of blood and air though.

Unless total fantasy is the goal, then all this nonsense is moot. Hehe.
