Zbrush At Siggraph - From My Perspective - Day 12

If there is still only the canvas, and not true 3d space it would be kind of a let down. I mean, it’s dumb that I have to limit my “canvas size” because of hardware, and the amount it effects performance is rediculous. I can pull a mesh from zbrush into xsi and rotate zoom/pan at a decent speed at full screen… zbrush though, I have to have a window at like 640x480 to get that performance. Other than that I’m downright excited about the program, but for me, if it doesn’t have the above, and if I didn’t already own 2.0, I don’t think I would buy it. This millions of polygons thing is nothing new now with 64bit architectures, everyone will be supporting it.

Regarding Ryan’s first post and the quote above… why whould there need to be “more on that later?” Just come out and say if it is in true 3d space or faked perspective, or if we have to put up with it. I would understand the latter as this is an upgrade, aka a direct extension of what 2.0 was. I don’t expect a completely different program. If that’s what I’m getting it should be called 3.0 and I’d pay for it.

Wow…thanks for the videos… all what i need to know is

B. a single mesh can have MULTIPLE TEXTURES or not.

And see a video showing layer working … and the perspective view, oh … and of course… we dont want to wait YEARS! to use 2.5 version…

The videos are really great and tantalizing, but sometimes I feel like Pixologic is kicking us when we’re down by showing us this promised functionality and not delivering. Personally, I don’t care to see anything new until at least the release date has been given. It’s too painful. All your customers have been more than patient. It’s time to stop fiddling with it and get the damn thing out the door.

Yay! that’s some great new videos today too, even more to drool over  …and as always, all good things are worth waiting for, same goes for ZBrush 2.5

Keep ‘em videos comin’ :+1:

Hi kyrandian,

I’m currently using xp-64, 4 GB RAM and running ZBrush 2. When I click to run ZBrush I receive an error message saying:

“ZBrush Executable has encountered a problem and needs to close”

I received the following message from Matthew:

The problem is not Java. We thought at first that it was, but ultimately it proved to be a matter of x64 having changed too much in regard to how memory and other system resources are handled. ZBrush is highly optimized to get the most out of your system, and the new protocols conflict with that optimization.
We’re investigating solutions for the x64 problem, but have no timeline as yet.

I just kant believe how sick this program is…I mean, I used to think, what possibly could be done to improve this unique program, and then BAM, they go and add all these new features, that make it even eaisier to use and create superb models…Bravo Pixologic, Hats off to you all…:+1: :+1: :+1:

Hi Ryan,

thank you the awesome demos. I´m a real “Zbrush addicted” (knocked out my 3dsmax) and spending most of my time with it.
I was very pleased last year(s) to hear about the new rigging functions, etc.
The same with your new announcements. Also that this should be for free
for Zbrush 2 Users… I feel like “Alice in Wonderland”.

But don´t you think pixologic loose their credibility if the make promises only?
There was nothing new for a long time…
I have only 35-45 modeling years left…so hurry up please! ;]

Thanks
Tommy

The new features are just outstanding. We have learned from years that each version is a maturational proccess so at least in my case (as many other zbrusher) we can have a nice waiting time being sure that the final product will be great!

I want to be excited, but then I remember a distant, familiar feeling I had in 2004 about the very same product.

These features are truly fantastic, the best (in my mind) being the retopology tool.

Then again, all these features, in software that isn’t soon to be released doesn’t really do much for me. Given the track record here, I’m gunshy, and my excitement is tempered because of it.

Hey, I wonder if this mutiple-texture thing allows you to paint ‘seamless’ accross multiple zones ‘within’ an object. I’m talking about like it’s done in the new BodyPaint. I was going to upgrade my BP just to get that feature - but I think I’ll hold-out first and see what happens in the big ‘Z’

On a slightly different note, I’d just like to say that no matter what; I personally think Pixologic deserve major respect for this release. I mean, when I’d heard those earlier features were going to be part of a free upgrade - I was surprised, and that’s doesn’t even take into account all the latest stuff they’re announcing.

If it doesn’t have a real perspective camera, and at least some basic poly-modeler (other than that edge-loop thing) I’ll be a bit choked, but that doesn’t mean I won’t be ‘majorly’ pleased at the rest of it.

It’s major excellence, that’s for sure :+1:

I don’t get all this whining. doesn’t take a genious to figure out that Pixologic would love to release the program right now. the reason they don’t is because there are still bugs/unfinished code. they’d LOVE to have it ready for release, WE’D love to have it in our hands. so why the constant bickering? it won’t speed up the release in ANY way! we all know that zbrush 2.5 is MASSIVELY delayed, repeating it over and over is pretty unecessary and damnright tiresome.

same goes for the “when will it be released?”, I mean seriously, do you actually think that if you ask that question just ‘one more time’ in this thread that suddenly Ryan will pop in and give you an exact date??? as soon as they can give a certain date they will…

/end of rant

Instinctively, adding low-level mesh tools to ZBrush feels like a kludge. I’m not opposed to the idea, but it would have to flow organically from what we’re seeing in the new version. Caving to the pressure to add things that don’t fit, no matter how useful or important, would be a bigger disappointment to me.

Real perspective would be great, but don’t hold your breath on that one. Now that projection master is essentially “live,” perspective distortion = projection stretching with every single mouse stroke. (They could compensate, but I have to think it’d drag your processor to a screeching halt. Unless the back-end has changed pretty drastically, anyway. Which would “break” most of ZBrush 2 and they’d have to rebuild the whole architecture, allowing more time to fix whatever breaks in the process of fixing that… If they’ve been making that change, it would account for most of the delays)

Here again, I’m only speculating. Don’t take my word for any of it.

I think the problem is Pixologic refuses to give any information regarding a targeted release date. When you do not give a estimated date people check every week or so for news when they leave with no information they leave a little more upset than before.

I have repeatedlly advised Pixologic to give a general release date even if they miss it. It would stop all the complaining which I am tired of hearing as well. However Pixologic is partly to blame with the no communication policy they have adapted. We are now in a Blog world of open communication. They need to go back to the Road map model they adapted
last year and not be obessed about competition and company secrets.

All they have to say were shooting for a late fall release. It would end all
the complaining. We all understand if the product is still buggy as needs work but no one understands the constant silence.

I hope they change their policy after Siggraph

The policy is working.

If pixologic continue to say nothing about release dates, if they don’t cave into the pressure, then before very much longer even the peanut brains will get the message and go pound on someone elses door for whatever pleasure they get out of it.

Authoritative silence and delivery will breed trust and advise a new and more appropriate customer relationship. When that goal is won, Pixologic will be the envy of the industry.

Boring looping minds bent on release dates are not anything that a serious company should entertain the pain of pacifying.

Hope to see some of ZB 2.5 new rigging videos I think that is a underestimated feature.

Secrets are a part of the game.
I have yet to work for any company or on any Film that didn’t
require me to sign an NDA.
That’s part of doing business in this highly competitive world we live in.

No one at any company owes anything to the general public.
It’s is us that romanticizes this personal notion.
They provide a product, which we use.
They are kind enough to even listen to us for time to time.
Or even ask some us for input, but that is where it ends.

This whole date thing is what has caused all this mess to begin with.
Obviously they had the best of intentions but weren’t able to achieve the extremely lofty goals they had set out.
When you are revolutionizing the industry it’s not a simple click away.

Finally, I just re-read this whole thread and it’s amazing how many people talk about the ,“we” under the,“I” umbrella.
Let them do the job at hand.
You will get it once it’s ready.

Yes It’s true…

The whining puts me in agonies.

I agree, mainly because I wouldn’t want to see ZBrush become ‘bloated’. It’s a bit like Silo really in that respect; it has it’s niche because it does what it does really well - and not much more besides.

I bought Silo to compliment ZBrush, and I’m thinking that’s how it’s going to work for me from the looks of things. It’s just sad I might not be able to use ZBrush as my main renderer. I really want to do that, but I’ll just have to see if placing multiple objects in 3D space has become more obvious and streight forward before I make that decision.

And now I’m really eager to know what ‘exactly’ is meant by “Perspective, but of course;)”

They do not have to show what they work keep it secret on but a release
date does not have to be secret.

From a basic Marketing point of view you have to set release with every
film , game ,commercial etc.
You can not build the proper marketing campaign or hype with out a release
date.

Every film has a release date so people know when to go to the movie.

Every Game has a general release date even if they miss it.

You have to set release dates most films build into their estimates
extra time for their releases so they do not miss them.
