Zbrush and 3ds Max questions

Hello, new user to ZBrush, a longer user on 3ds Max. Decided to give ZBrush a go, and it seems to be a pretty good program (except for the camera controls :D), specially when it comes to editing masses of polygons effectively. I have a few questions regarding ZBrush.

  1. When using the move brush, is it possible to select a vertex and move it in a fixed coordinate, like in x or y direction ? Or somehow save selections of vertices and tilt the camera and then move your selections ? I did not seem to see any Cartesian coordinate slider anywhere.

I really like how ZBrush handles subdivisions, and for that I got 2 questions.

  1. When importing in an .obj model, and using subdivisions, is it possible to lock in the initial subdivision vertex locations ? When dividing, the model seems to shrink a tiny bit ?

  2. How do I save my work as a project ? The only options I have available are save as tools and save as document. The only time I get to save my work as a project is when exiting the program and it asks me to save it as a project.

Thank you for reading

  1. you can mask the point you want to move, then invert the mask so only that point is unmasked, then you can move it free hand or use “offset” in the deformation palette.

  2. when you subdivide turn off smt, it’s turned on by default. using smt smooths the faceting which causes the object to deform slightly. turning it off your object will remain exactly as it is while subdividing.

  3. you can save a project from the “file” menu up top.

  1. If exact vertex locations are important you can store a morph target before subdividing your mesh and switch back to that at any point you’d like. You can also go to your lowest subD level and import your mesh again replacing the changed geo with the original.

i never thought of that. thanks for the tip beta.
