ZBrush alphas are 16 bits in depth?

From the wiki

“Note: ZBrush alphas are 16 bits in depth, which simply put means that they can produce much smoother gradations in gray, and hence wherever they used. Some other programs are limited to 8-but alphas, which can produce noticeable ‘stairstepping’ artifacts.”

“Note: Some image file formats do not support 16-bit grayscales. If you load such files, you may get the stairstepping effect described earlier. When using external programs to create alphas, try to use one that offers 16-bit grayscales.”

Please provide a list of some graphics programs that addresses second note.

I am finding some programs are opening 16bit files but saves as 8bit in files

TIA

John

I have no problem with Photoshop. Just check the Image settings to make sure that it’s a 16-bit grayscale.

I guess that’s Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop CS3 Extended

does Photoshop 7 or Photoshop CS2 support saving, editing of 16 bit grayscales?

You can use Photoshop CS2 to open/create/edit/save 16 bit grayscales, though some operations and filters are not available. To be sure that you are at the correct bit depth check the Image>Mode.

Bodypaint and 3D coat support also 16 and 32 bits textures.

Thanks marcus_civis.

rimasson does the programs bring in color photos and let you convert to 16 bit grayscale and edit the 16 bit grayscale with layers (or cmyk) for editing?

both apps can do that. With 3d coat, you will be able to edit 1 4k displacement map with layers and with a visual feedback on your model or in 2d. (the limitation comes from you video card mem)
With bodypaint, you will be able to paint on multiple textures at the same time, but you will not be able to preview the displacement in real time. You will view the maps as color maps.

Have a look to these app. they have both demo versions.
