For some reason, the standard brush does not work anymore. (See Image) Also, when I try "reset brushes’ zbrush crashes.
All other brushes seem to work normally.

Does it crash when using “reset current brush”, or “reset all brushes”? Usually, “reset current brush” clears this issue.
It crashes when using ‘reset all brushes’. But what could explain the strange behavior of the standard brush? In previous releases, it worked without problems.
Theres a known bug in r8 that sometimes causes this to happen to brushes. As I said previously, “reset current brush” fixes it. So use that function,not “reset all brushes”. If that function also makes you crash, it’s likely a problem with your install.

But it changes back to the wrong behavior when I restart Zbrush. So I have to reset the standard brush every time. Is this a common problem in 4R8P1?
No, it’s unusual for the bug to be happening that frequently. Unless of course you’re engaging in the exact ( unknown) behavior that causes it.
After resetting the brush, restart zbrush and do not load your previous tool or project file. Does the brush malfunction with any of the pre-made objects in lightbox?
If it does, something is probably amiss with you installation. If it doesn’t then the problem either lies with the file or tool you’re experiencing this with, or a specific action you keep trying to perform. In the case of the latter, if you can identify what causes the brush to break, this should be sent to Support.
