Zbrush 4r7 and wine/linux, almost works

Still think Zbrush should be available on Linux. Better process and threading performance than windows, and disk access in general is faster too.

Anyways, 4R7 demo ALMOST works in wine, but the popup dialog for the demo key is blank. So I can’t enter the demo license key and it just aborts.

Oh well, I’d love to leave windows behind. Macs dont count. Overpriced and underperforming.

Would love ZBrush on Linux! Many disgruntled users, ahem, have finally abandoned Windows for good in the wake of the dud that was 8 and not to mention Microsoft’s involvement in PRISM, etc.

Problem is though, unlikely Adobe will ever port Photoshop anytime soon. So most professionals using a theoretical Linux ZBrush would still need at least a VM for Windows or Mac, in which case if you are already jumping in and out of Photoshop it’s not a stretch to have ZBrush there too… chicken or egg problem I suppose.

The request for Linux ZBrush is more relevant than ever before, with the coming of Windows 10 and Microsoft’s unsettling new “by default” privacy intrusions:

“We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to protect our customers or enforce the terms governing the use of the services.”

zbrush will lose market in linux platform, considering how many top studios uses linux.
alot of games are also having linux variants, thanks to steam. i don’t see why pixologic doesn’t consider a port to linux a priority
especially, the native optimazation that linux can provide to zbrush, heck you can consider that zbrush 4r8 itself

3d coat is available in linux and have better painting tools( atleast i think so), been trying it out abit, i still miss my custom brushes in zbrush:(

win10 sucks, i use linux mint, my computer runs 5x faster, 400mb ram indle while in win10 it did 1.7gb

i happen to come back to help others who wan’t to get this to work, im on linux mint.
1.you need to install zb in 32bit wine, i highly recommend “playonlinux” to manage wine.
the reason is zbrush seems to fail the install when done on wine64.
2.in the wine configuration>graphics, check emulate a virtual desktop, then choose your resolution.
3.start zbrush, if it prompts it can’t find a tablet, just press ok and wait for 1-2min it should start.

couple of things doesn’t work:
1.decimation master - fails to precompute, can be cancelled by esc
2.noisemaker edit window. - this one is fatal
3.quicksave doesn’t overwrite if maxsave is exceed, just delete the content if its full
4.some reports GOZ fails, i have no idea im using houdini which doesn’t have any GOZ so i just deal with OBJ

if you have no idea about WINE, just install PlayOnLinux you don’t have to fiddle in the terminal.
i have been testing this in a month, seem to work nicely
hope for a true linux variant, goodluck

Yes, with the latest windows10 release, what MS wants is stupid. I don’t like macs either.

I understand linux is ‘fragmented’, but Pixologic could build a staticly linked binary and be done. They could also choose to support SteamOs or Ubuntu/Debian and it would work on a whole host of linux variants. Shoot, with SteamOs they could sell it through the steam store and we wouldn’t have to deal with brain dead computer activation nonsense that the current DRM uses.

Just sit down at a new computer, log into steam, install and activate zbrush on a new pc, and the old copy is deactivated.

The only reason I use windows still is Zbrush. And windows is getting worse and worse. 8.1 seemed like a slight improvement. 10 is apparently malware disguised as an OS.

Also the slow start of Zbrush in wine seems to be due to it doing something like 8 million keyboard polling requests during startup which seems excessive

https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37419

Looks like pixologic should fix that…

On startup, several complex built-in scripts get executed, resulting in millions of script engine calls.

I measured around 8 million(!) calls to ‘GetForegroundWindow’ which includes wineserver roundtrip.
If you have the focus on main window (default) add another 8 million calls to ‘GetAsyncKeyState’ which includes wineserver roundtrip.

Just want to pipe up, apparently windows 10 is pretty bad. Would murder for a SteamOS/Ubuntu Zbrush.

Don’t want to spend $3000 for a underpowered overpriced Mac.

Okay, so using playonlinux, wine 1.7.55 with msvc2008, the demo version installs and starts super fast compared to its start speed under windows 8.1.

The only problem is the license information dialog popup for the demo is blank with just a “Ok” button and no other text. Clicking the button closes zbrush. No errors in wine log. The UI looks great though.

Also seems Zbrush is using Qt now, which would make porting to Linux easier.

Really, ZBrush on Steam with Steam DRM would be a treat compared to the current scheme which is pretty lackluster.
