ZBrush 4R2 - Out of disk space - Answered

I have a couple of Macs that get an Out of disk space error on launch. The same machines also come up with the activation window even after I have activated them. I have tried reinstalling the application and still have the same issue.

This is a permissions issue. ZBrush is unable to write to its own folder and subfolders.

The simplest solution is to get info on the ZBrush 4R2 folder. Set “Everyone” to “Read & Write”. Then click the gear icon and choose the option to apply to enclosed items.

That should resolve the problem for you.

What is the workaround for pcs? I am getting the same error.

The PC version should be installed and activated by an administrator account. It will then have the necessary permissions for all users on that computer.

That specific error indicates that permissions do not allow ZBrush to write its virtual memory file. If you read the 4R4 PDF found in your installation’s Documentation folder, it explains where the user data files are now stored and you could adjust the permissions for those specific folders. But it’s far easier just to install and activate using an admin account.

I installed the r4 update while logged into my computer as myself, and my supervisor assures me that I am setup to be an administrator on this box. The install went smoothly, but I am seeing some errors after working for a couple of hours on the same file. See below.

error.jpg

The first error occurs when I try to save a file with approx. 1.54 Mil Total Points. The second error occurs when trying to open a different file (.zpr) that I have already saved. It too has about the same number of points.

I went through the .pdf you cited and then changed my scratch path by editing ZBrushScratchDiskPath.txt, and pointing it to a drive where I have my other programs scratch disks pointed. After a restart the above two errors persists.

Is my supervisor lying about me having admistrator priveleges on this box? How would I check? I am able to right-click on programs and select “Run as administrator.” By the way, I tried this with ZBrush 4 r4 and it had no effect.

Should I deactivate ZB, have my supervisor login and then reactivate?

I did not see these errors with r3, and my supervisor was the person who installed the program at that time.

Thank you for your assistance.

System Specs:
Running Win 7 Pro 64bit SP1

Start>Control Panel>User Accounts and Family Safety>User Accounts. This will let you see what security level your account has. If you are an admin, it will say Administrator by your login name.

ZBrush must be installed and activated by an admin, after which it should work fine for all users on that computer.

@aurick: thanks for the fast response.

I am fairly certain that I am indeed an administrator on this box. When I go to Control Panel\System and Security\System I am able to click on the Change settings link. I can change the name of the computer in the Computer Name tab that appears.

So, I believe that I am indeed an administrator and that I installed ZB 4 r4 as an administrator. Am I in error, or is there another method to solving these memory errors?

I saw this thread:

Update: I found the problem. Even though I have full admin privileges on my Win 7 machine, I still need to run some installers as admin–I think what happened is that ZBrush didn’t have permission to write to the directory, and subsequently other functions such as virtual memory. Anyhow, the solution, as Will Miller in Support so helpfully pointed out, was to do a reinstall running the installer as admin. That seems to have fixed the problem.

I deactivated, uninstalled, then reinstalled. This time, however, I reinstalled by right-clicking on the installer and choosing ***8220;Run as administrator.***8221;

The problem persists even after this.

Contrary to my earlier post, the problem may be fixed.

It seems that I can create new files, and open and close them, without incident. However, the files I had created while running the ZBrush r4 install without running as administrator, seem to be corrupted.

So, running the installer as administrator even though you have administrator privileges is advisable it seems.

Good luck, all.

Very interesting. We’ll keep this in mind, although you are the first person to report anything like that thus far.

I’m having the exact same issue - am discussing it with Pixologic now, so will hopefully find a solution…
On a mac, with tons of space, i’m the admin, installed it as an admin, etc…
Just can’t open or save the very important files i’ve been working on! :s
