Zbrush 4 Mem & Draw size

Hi guys,

I have 8gb RAM on Win7 64-bit (512mb on GFX card). I know zbrush is still only 32bit, so the most access it will show is 4096 for mem.

What would the optimial settings be for “Mem” on my system? (?=unsure)

Compact Mem: 4096
Doc Undo: 4
Tool Undo: 4
MaxPolyPerMesh: ?
HD Preview MaxPoly: ?
Compact Now: Is this like “purge” in photoshop?

question 2:
When I resize my brush (S), the size randomly jumps big and small as i drag the slider? is this something relating to my system only? and is there a way to fix it? Currently I hold shift after I press S to make it size smoothly as expected.

Thanks for any info.

Question 1 - See this post

Question 2 - Don’t hold down S key. Press once then adjust your draw size.

@jawa64: Yep, just came from there before posting.

@zber2: Thanks for the link. And yep…seems I moved the mouse too quick instead of pausing and it disappeared too quickly, thus getting into the bad habit of holding it down. Thanks!

So according to that post, for my 8gb ram, etc

Default after clean Install:
Compact Mem: 256
Doc Undo: 4
Tool Undo: 4
MaxPolyPerMesh: 21.81
HD Preview MaxPoly: 10.9

My Tweaked settings:
Compact Mem: 4096 <-- since I have 8gb ram, I can set it to max
Doc Undo: 4
Tool Undo: 4
MaxPolyPerMesh: 21.81 <-- so I only tweak this on the fly <43.62 max if needed (as it doesn’t save with the config file)
HD Preview MaxPoly: 10.9 <-- “Sets the maximum amount of polygons that will be visible when you enter HD sculpting” (noob question: If the MaxPolyPerMesh is double this value, then is this used on masked sections of meshes only or something? the Ctrl popup doesn’t explain it too well.)

Sorry for noob questions, I’ve just started with Zbrush.

Looks like your good to go. There is a tutorial on HD Sculpting in ZClassroom to help you understand it a bit better.

Perfect! HD Sculpting is indeed awesome! Thanks again! xD
