ZBrush 4 clipping brushes

This may be a very VERY stupid request but could anyone give me a concise rundown on how to use the clipping brushes? I feel stupid asking but after studying the videos and playing around I still get really weird results from using them.

I know its Ctrl+Shift to use them but after that it seems to consistantly do weird things. I know I’m doing something completely wrong but it would be great if I could get an exact method of using these brushes - everyone else seems to be able to use them grand.

Again feel really stupid asking this and any help is much appreciated.

Turns out that holding down the alt key can affect the results with the clipping brushes.
