If someone purchases ZBrush 4.4 at this point, so close to version 5, do they get a free upgrade to 5? I am aware that if you are an existing ZB owner, ZB 5 is going to be a pay upgrade. I am curious as many people purchase ZB back when it was sub 400 and would they be subject to the same pricing as someone purchasing ZB at its current $699 price tag.

To date, all upgrades have been free.
At some point, we will start charging for upgrades. No information has been given regarding when that might happen. Even so, the upgrade price will certainly be significantly less than buying a new license.
Also, no info has been given regarding when ZBrush 5 will come out. Since 4R4 was just launched, it’s safe to say that 5 is not going to be for a while yet.
What makes you aware of that?
You’ve got it wrong. Anyone with a previous version of Zbrush has been able to upgrade to the latest version, 4R4, at no cost. Even those with version 1 can upgrade completely to 4 without being charged a cent.
They might start charging for upgrades in the future but so far it’s been free.
